GrahamT
Hi All, I have seen this Shine 5 stringer for sale but the owner doesn't know the model or the specs apart from that it has active switching. He stated that it was most probably an SB-35 but they don't have an f-hole. Do any of you recognise this? Any help would be gratefully received. Dom in Dorset
I had one ! converted to fretless , can't remember what model it was, pretty good bass for the money. The controls are - master vol, blend, bass , mid and treble. it is active. How much is he asking?
lemmywinks
This one? http://www.ebay.co.u...=p2047675.l2557 It's a Shine SBA 625 I think. RRP was £445 and would obviously sell for a fair bit less, more info here: http://www.worthpoin...-five-165870873 Not far from me and has been on my local searches for ages, they went under quite a while ago and have been selling off stock on eBay. This one hasn't shifted though, he may be open to a cheeky offer. There was another one for sale locally too here, probably bought from the same shop (Poulton is just down the road from this seller): http://www.ebay.co.u...=p2047675.l2557 That is the 6er which sold for £198 so £299 for the 5 (nice and new though it is) is a bit optimistic. GrahamT
You are truly a sleuth, Lemmy. Yes, I saw this Shine on eBay and let it finish. I was attracted by the potential that it may have a warm tone, what with the f-hole and all. It looked much like a Spectorcore. I was looking for something a bit different to give me some tonal variety to that of my other, solid bodied, basses nice though they are. Dom, is my premise correct? Dom in Dorset
Your premise being?
lemmywinks
I think he thought the f hole would contribute to the sound and give it more acoustic qualities I would say the preamp will be the overbearing factor here though and the f hole will probably not factor much in the overall sound, you're the man who knows though Dom as you owned one. The Shine 6er I had was a bit different to this, hopefully the one here has a better pre and pickups.
Dom in Dorset
I doubt if the f hole made any difference, it sits over a small chamber. The centre of the instrument from neck to bridge is solid, that's the bit that counts. You can get a good range of tones from it, I replaced the board with a fretless ebony board ( I got it cheap due to a busted truss rod which I also replaced) It was an interesting project but not a bass that I wanted to keep, went over to a fretless passive jazz. Seen here in action recording this: https://soundcloud.com/dominic-allan/the-fox-mp3
GrahamT
Ahh. Thanks for the info. Maybe I'll pass on this one then. Apart from a Warwick Star Bass do you know of a 5 string semi for reasonable money ie no more than £600?
lemmywinks
Dean Rhapsody, Godin A5 (probably your best bet), Spector Spectorcore. I think the Godin and the Spector have a piezo so are probably more like what you are looking for. Warwick Infinity and Rick Turner Renaissance are also semi hollow or chambered and come in 5 string variants but will be well over budget. Very nice though! Annoying Twit
I wonder why Epiphone don't make five string versions of either the Zenith nor the Jack Casady basses.
