I see that lots of people use the TC Polytune pedal.

Does the display stay on all the time, or is it activated by the foot switch on the pedal?

I use the TC footswitch (RC4) and it always shows the played note and its pitch. Very useful.

thank you please

Only when you press the foot switch - it's is a more traditional tuner in that sense.
It is mites tuning only as well. No bypass (you can't tune and hear the instrument, unless you are using it via a tuner out connection or similar).

It's my favourite tuner in terms of display though.

Thanks Shep,

I do find the permanent display on the RC4 very handy. Is there a pedal Tuner with this facility?

I agree about the Polytune display (and functionality), its a nice piece of kit.

Boss tu-3 does this, never had a problem at all with it on my rig.

Its not true bypass but tbh i really dnt worry to much about all that, the buffer in the pedal is good and ive never noticed an adverse effect

Basically any tuner which has a 'through' as well as an 'out' is what you want. As mentioned the Boss TU-2 and TU-3 provide this function along with a few others. Using the 'out' will mute when you press the footswitch, using the 'through' will not.

Not sure if i picked this up correctly but I thought the Polytune could be set to inhibit the OUT when tuning or used as a straight thru while tuning or not. The footswitch only operates the display on/off in that mode. There are a few little buttons on the end where connectors are for setting it up to do different modes.

I haven't experimented with it to confirm and i use mine with OUT inhibited when tuning.

Might be worth checking the manual from TC website to confirm.

I would check mine but mailing from work at the moment.

Thanks Dave, good info.

The new amp I'm considering has a Tuner Out facility so it looks like I'm sorted.

I *THINK* the Polytune does have the option to switch it to not mute. I only know as my bands 2 guitarists use theirs in through mode. I have one but like it the way it is tbh.
