leroydiamond Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 PLAYING IN A ROCK COVERS BAND AND WANT TO TAKE THE PRESSURE OFF OUR VOCALIST FOR A REGULAR EXTENDED SATURDAY NIGHT GIG, SO WE WANT TO INTRODUCE SOME INSTRUMENTALS. WE ARE A 3 PIECE (DRUMS, GUITAR, BASS). ANY RECOMMENDATIONS? Quote
Mark_Bass Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 Hmmmm....I'd say Iron Maidens Losfer Words off of powerslave. But that's the only one that springs to mind at the mo, I'm sure others could suggest better/more accessible to the listener Quote
the_skezz Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 Rush's YYZ, assuming that you are all Godlike at playing your instruments. Otherwise, I'm hard pushed to think of anything that'd be suitable for a covers act - most instrumentals tend to only be known by diehard fans of the original band. Though speaking purely for myself, I'd love to show up at a gig to see the aforementioned Losfer Words being played Quote
Hobbayne Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 The F1 bit from Fleetwood Macs' The Chain, makes a great instrumental rocker! Quote

paulconnolly Posted December 15, 2013 Posted December 15, 2013 We're doing The Chain in our next set and we've learnt In That Quiet Earth. This is tricky without keys but with the addition of flute it sounds pretty good to me Quote
leroydiamond Posted December 16, 2013 Author Posted December 16, 2013 Thanks for all the recommendations. Wow! ye guys are setting the bar pretty high, though YYZ is a piece of p**s Quote
mikeh Posted December 16, 2013 Posted December 16, 2013 A Band I was in years ago did Steve vais for the love if God, absolutely bombed, needless to say we only did it the once Quote

I think whether we put it in will depend on the audience and how we feel the gig is going. Quote
gerryc Posted December 16, 2013 Posted December 16, 2013 Band round our way used to do "Wipe out " by the Surfaris? used to go down a storm. Quote
Cosmo Valdemar Posted December 16, 2013 Posted December 16, 2013 Everybody loves a bit of The Shadows now don't they? Plus the audience will most likely recognise the tune. Also, Walk Don't Run or Wipeout. Quote
RAY AGAINST THE MACHINE Posted December 16, 2013 Posted December 16, 2013 Have done 2 by satch; day at the beach/all alone. Plus wipeout. All went down really well Quote
bassjunkie Posted December 16, 2013 Posted December 16, 2013 The beasties boys did a few cool instrumental grooves you could try to use/adapt if that suits your genre? Rich Quote
xilddx Posted December 16, 2013 Posted December 16, 2013 You have two choices in my book. Green Onions, or Dick Dale's version of Misirlou. Quote

Paul S Posted December 16, 2013 Posted December 16, 2013 If you are ok with some old fashioned RnB, what about 'Hideaway', a la John Mayall/Eric Clapton? Or 'Steppin' out'? Bit heavier - 'Rat Salad', Black Sabbath Quote
Conan Posted December 16, 2013 Posted December 16, 2013
Dick Dale's version of Misirlou.
Good call! Or this one... leroydiamond Posted December 16, 2013 Author Posted December 16, 2013 Some great recommendations boys and girls. Keep them coming. I will draw up a short list by the weekend and make suggestions to my band mates. Great stuff and many thanks. I think an important thing to factor in is that the tunes need to be pretty much instantly recognisable by a crowd made up of regular punters out for a few beers on a Saturday night. Quote
