charic Posted June 29, 2008 Posted June 29, 2008 Planning a custom build and im trying to think of what woods i should have, i know i want them staining to very specific colours. Top half trans black (or find black wood would be better) bottom half see through bright green. Ideas? Also any other stained woods (no repeaters please) this is wood porn Quote
Mr. Foxen Posted June 29, 2008 Posted June 29, 2008 Your best bet would be to perv up This place. Quote
charic Posted June 30, 2008 Author Posted June 30, 2008 Im already quite familiar with warmoth having planned another bass for the future with them. Thunderbird, quilted maple top with redburst and 100& wenge neck. This is just a chance for people to show off woods and finishes that they like. Quote
neepheid Posted June 30, 2008 Posted June 30, 2008 This is how my first custom build turned out. Trouble is I have no idea what wood it is - I inherited the body from a half finished project! Colron French Polish on some top of some sort. If I had to guess, I'd say walnut, teak or something car dashboard-like. I think it counts as "staining" as it has certainly coloured the wood - this was it sanded down to bare wood: No, I wouldn't do it again if I didn't have to: took forever, was a lot of hard work and ultimately had to cheat to get a finish I liked. EBS_freak Posted June 30, 2008 Posted June 30, 2008 When it comes to stains, it's got to be tiger eye on a nice piece of quilt... Quote

JakeBrownBass Posted June 30, 2008 Posted June 30, 2008 Love the look of quilted maple in blue! Quote

I've always loved transparent blue on anything. I also like ash quite a lot if there's a nice grain to it: Quote

charic Posted July 1, 2008 Author Posted July 1, 2008 Indeed they do Im just wondering on favourite woods for stains. Im quite partial to quilted maple myself. But i generally dont like trans black quilted maple (feel free if you know a particularly good example of it though!) Quote
Peaty Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 I think this holly would look great with a translucent black stain. http://www.lanarkshirehardwoods.co.uk/stoc...os/361.1.sl.jpg also if it is just a relatively thin top then a strongly spalted beach would look good http://www.lanarkshirehardwoods.co.uk/stoc...tos/624.1sl.jpg or http://www.lanarkshirehardwoods.co.uk/stoc...1.2sl%20(2).jpg Pete Quote

charic Posted July 4, 2008 Author Posted July 4, 2008 Ive always had a thing for spalted wood, its just tough to imagine spalted wood with a finish on. Ive never been a HUGE fan of flame for some reason. Just doesn't strike me particularly I guess Quote
budget bassist Posted July 6, 2008 Posted July 6, 2008 you're just picky though i think you're right about the spalted wood Quote
