Planning a custom build and im trying to think of what woods i should have, i know i want them staining to very specific colours. Top half trans black (or find black wood would be better) bottom half see through bright green.

Ideas? Also any other stained woods (no repeaters please) this is wood porn :)

Im already quite familiar with warmoth having planned another bass for the future with them. Thunderbird, quilted maple top with redburst and 100& wenge neck.

This is just a chance for people to show off woods and finishes that they like. :)

This is how my first custom build turned out. Trouble is I have no idea what wood it is - I inherited the body from a half finished project! Colron French Polish on some top of some sort. If I had to guess, I'd say walnut, teak or something car dashboard-like.

I think it counts as "staining" as it has certainly coloured the wood - this was it sanded down to bare wood:

No, I wouldn't do it again if I didn't have to: took forever, was a lot of hard work and ultimately had to cheat to get a finish I liked.

Yeah, there's a Jazz body on Warmoth with the same finish as that. Something I might be interested in when I've got cash to splash. Lovely looking.

Indeed they do :)

Im just wondering on favourite woods for stains. Im quite partial to quilted maple myself. But i generally dont like trans black quilted maple (feel free if you know a particularly good example of it though!)

I think this holly would look great with a translucent black stain.

also if it is just a relatively thin top then a strongly spalted beach would look good

I think flame maple looks particularly good in trans black.
