bubinga5 Posted December 25, 2013 Posted December 25, 2013 (edited) Im am so in awe of this guy. Without doubt my favourite musician of all time.. there are so many great records that this guitar magician has written that i love. his gravely voice is just epic imo.. he seems to have a rebirth lately, and rightly so. a fantastic guitar/ composer/piano player, all round master. these 2 records are later in his career. seriously sexy record. the bass playing is just fabulous. Dingus Posted December 25, 2013 Posted December 25, 2013 Another big Bobby Womack fan here. What a voice , what a guitarist what a songwriter! My own favourite era of his music is a bit earlier than these examples, between the late Sixties and mid-1970's when he was recording mainly with the Muscle Shoals musicians , but any Bobby Womack record immediately has my attention . He's written some great songs for other people, too, like" Love TKO "for Teddy Pendergrass. . Quote
bubinga5 Posted December 25, 2013 Author Posted December 25, 2013 (edited) what Bobby Womack thread would be complete without this number. Edited December 25, 2013 by bubinga5 Quote

I'm sorry for a wee hijack but seeing as it is Xmas the Raphael Sadiq and Sky video was for me, your finest moment. Thurbs Posted December 25, 2013 Posted December 25, 2013 I got up early and ran to the front of the stage at this years Latitude festival and managed to bag a place front and centre... what an hour! Highlight of the weekend for me (him and Richard Ashcroft). Quote

BetaFunk Posted December 25, 2013 Posted December 25, 2013 This has been one of my favourite Bobby Womack track for over 40 years. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uLxQCpGlj_k Quote
BetaFunk Posted December 25, 2013 Posted December 25, 2013 (edited) I first heard this when DJ Dave Simmonds played this on his Radio 1 Soul Show on it's release. He late went on to host a soul show on Radio London throughout the 70s. In those days (early 70s) you could only track down the latest soul releases by reading the music press every week, from DJs who specialized in soul music, by word of mouth or from specialist music shops that we frequented. Simmonds was one of the first (maybe THE first) to bring a lot of this music to a national audience. This is great. BetaFunk Posted December 25, 2013 Posted December 25, 2013 (edited) BW is certainly a soul legend. I saw him in the 70s and then again in the 80s during 'The Poet' period. At Hammersmith in the 70s he was supported by British band Kokomo (who had covered I Can Understand It) and it was really strange seeing a band on stage on this big venue that you usually saw regularly on the London Pub Rock scene for 50p. If you're a fan don't read any reviews of his 1976 Hammersmith gig! Edited December 25, 2013 by BetaFunk Quote
Horizontalste Posted December 25, 2013 Posted December 25, 2013 I'm a fan of The Bravest Man in the Universe, anyone else like the later stuff? Quote
The Valentinos (Bobby & Cecil Womack and brothers) were protoges of Sam Cooke. It's said that it was New York DJ 'Murray The K' who gave the Rolling Stones the Valentinos 45 and suggested that they record it. I think that the Stones really nailed this one. Both are great records. Edited March 24, 2014 by icastle Link fixed. Quote
molan Posted December 25, 2013 Posted December 25, 2013 This is one of one threads where all the video links are blank on my ipad - I wish someone would get this fixed! It's only on BC that this happens When my kids were young we lived in a very quiet, white middle class area. I often had Bobby W playing at home and had some good video footage of him as well. The first coloured person my daughter saw was when we were out shopping one day. She spotted a cool guy walking towards us and said "ooh look Daddy, there's a Womack"! I nearly died. . . Quote
Bilbo Posted December 26, 2013 Posted December 26, 2013 Dudley Phillips played bass with BW. I had a couple of lessons with Dudley. Lovely player. Quote
