I'm betting on a J.

Edit: But that's not surprising, so... P bass? :)
Edit. P bass isn't surprising either, so... Stingray? G&L? That would be surprising. :)

its not an electric bass. its Richard Bull playing the bass line on a keyboard.

I'd never have guessed. Well I didn't guess, obviously. :)

i thought there is no way you can play a bass line like that, with all the nuances that he plays on a keyboard. hes a very clever guy

It's the ultimate expression of a keyboard player encroaching on bass territory. :D

i do worry a little. you could say that you can't beat human touch, but Richard seems to cope. George Duke (RIP) plays it to the max. ive got to be honest i dont want to think im constrained to the layout of the bass. its a great thing when you think about baselines out of context. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l1toLihZkDs

I think you have to give most of the credit to the makers of Trillian though. That program contains some insanely nice bass sounds that require almost no effort to get them to sound great.

I'm not a keyboard player; I'm a guitarist, so I put a lot of thought into making a bass track, which usually comes about as part of the writing process with Bluey. Occasionally they'll be handed over to a bass player to record which is what happened on the Positivity album; mostly my bass lines but played by Randy.

Besides, I like to think that what I do is beneficial to the craft of bass playing and my work has certainly benefited some bass players! Bluey told me that they used 'Colibri' at Berkley as part of their bass curriculum, thinking that it was a live bass track! In fact, most people assume that it was recorded by Randy, which is one hell of a compliment.

Who played what on 'Tribes, Vibes & Scribes' can be found here.

Spectrosonics, along with the lovely Omnisphere Synth and Stylus RMX Drum/Perc module.

But there are other good Libraries out there that can be loaded into Kontakt.

My bass teacher told me he'd like me to try and nail this great line he'd just heard by Randy Hope-Taylor when Tribes was released. I wonder if he knows after all these years  ( I never got it to sound right if you're wondering)

Many thanks for the information, and hats off to you. You had me fooled (and 50,000 others I suspect)

I saw a jazz act play in Bristol last year where the keyboard player played the bass line and I would have sworn it was a very accomplished bass player playing it. It was very much in the style of the song you originally posted about.
