lowlandtrees
Only been playing DB 9 months. Teaching myself to slap using Youtube stuff (no teachers nearby). Have Innov Silver Slaps on a Kania contra (small bodied similar to Emminence EUB). I have a problem with slapping open E and to a lesser extent the A. Don't have a problem with fingered notes My question is ... 1. Does everyone have this problem....maybe open strings are not slapped? 2. Is it my technique....will it come with more practice 3 Is it the G string that is too slack and needs changing? 4 EUBs are crap to slap Jimmy
Rabbie
Hi Jimmy can you be a bit more specific as to what your problem is? Is the action maybe too high for you to produce a slap sound, or to low for your fingers to get under? Slapping open strings is very much allowed. Not sure where the G string comes into your equation but it is unlikely to need changing. Finally, yes EUBs are not great for slapping, but it can be done. thisnameistaken
The E and A strings tend to flap around quite a bit so it's harder to get a tight controlled slap out of them, they'll sound better the better you get, but the E will always be the weakest string. AndyBass
My thoughts for what it's worth: 1 and 2: Yes it's probably a technique thing and will come with time and practice - I found the slightly greater lack of control over a slapped open note to be problematic to begin with. Less so but still prefer to avoid them now 3. I think you might mean the E string in the context of your post? If so it may be the strings, some sets the E can feel very loose and flabby. I ditched my Golden Slap E and A for Rockabillys (slightly higher tension) for exactly that reason 4. I have a Stagg EUB which I find much easier to slap and do cool fancy multi slap stuff on than my DB (partly down to strings and setup as my DB is set for other things at the minute). Technique-wise EUBs are fine to slap in my experience Hope that's some help.
lowlandtrees
Thanx for the replies. Yes the E seems flappy and feel I could use a higher tension string. Since they are so damned expensive, however, I will persist for a while. Thanx again....very useful advice Jimmy
artisan
See if you can find a Super Silver E string, sounds like a Silver Slap but higher tension,i find it slaps very well.
