On board Amp Compressors

I'm in the process of swapping amps to wither a Mesa M-pulse or M9 Carbine i was wondering about what people thought about the mesa compressor?
In particular its place in the signal chain on the amp.
The Compressor is placed after all the eq and before the master volume control. I think most of the other compressors I've seen on bass amps have been placed just after the first input gain pot.

I've not personally used compression on my bass before and i'd only like to use it to try give a more balanced sound, but when i have, i've generally used it before the amp.
Would this be the general rule of thumb or am i mistaken?

Cheers :-)
