merello Posted December 31, 2013 Posted December 31, 2013 Anyone advise on a cheap fretless? Birthday in February and feel that my sexy funky grooviness will be enhanced by said purchase. Quote
HowieBass Posted December 31, 2013 Posted December 31, 2013 (edited) I've seen lots of good reviews for the Squier Vintage Modified Fretless Jazz and it comes with an ebonol (hard synthetic) fingerboard so it won't wear (as ebony would) even if you decide to use roundwounds, plus it's lined which will help with correct intonation I've also seen some good reviews of the Vintage Icon V96 which is a 'distressed' Jazz version that tries to emulate Jaco's bass with a more conventional lined fingerboard but note that the board isn't epoxy coated so you'll have to run flats to avoid undue wear (note on this second YouTube clip that the bass is being run through effects; fretless sounds lovely with a little chorus and reverb) Edited December 31, 2013 by HowieBass Quote

It is also the lightest full scale bass i've ever owned. Edited December 31, 2013 by BetaFunk Quote
Happy Jack Posted December 31, 2013 Posted December 31, 2013 Also keep an eye out for an 80's/90's SGC Nanyo Bass Collection. They've been undervalued for years now, and prices are just starting to creep up for fretted basses, but I imagine you can still pick up a fretless (if you can find one) for £200 or so. The quality for that price will blow you away. Quote
Woodinblack Posted December 31, 2013 Posted December 31, 2013 I have a Squier VM Fretless which I bought when I went out to get another type of Jazz, one with frets, but fell in love with. It plays well, has a lovely neck and balance. Pots are a bit cheap but you kind of expect that, but still one of my faves to play. I played with rounds for a while then on recomendation from here, got some chrome flats and love them. I have't tried the vintage to compare, the only other fretless I tried was a Fender Jazz fretless, but it wasn't set up well and it wasn't as good (and it was heavier). Quote
Len_derby Posted December 31, 2013 Posted December 31, 2013 I've got a Yamaha BBN4F that I've been very happy with. Fretless Yamahas don't seem to come up for sale very often, but they're well worth a look in my experience. Quote

The first fretless I owned was an RBX270F, and for £90 that was a great way to get into fretless playing at minimal cost. Quote

gsgbass Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 I'd go with a Fender Standard Fretless. I had one a few years ago, a good bass. Quote
Razor Posted January 2, 2014 Posted January 2, 2014 Hi, I got my greasy mitts on an early 80's ibanez blazer fretless a few weeks ago, and with advice from howiebass and others, it's playing really nicely.. There's a few about and seen to change hands did about 300 quid. Can recommend em.. Quote
