I'm surprised that anyone is surprised when older singers struggle vocally. We get get the same comments regarding Paul McCartney. Yet, we're not surprised when an athlete starts to slow down when they reach their 30s. The sad fact is, the voice is controlled by muscles and as with any muscles, they deteriorate with age.

Fair point. Davies' recent albums have shown he's lost none of his songwriting ability so it must be frustrating when artists who also rely to a large extent on their distinctive voices start to lose that aspect of their talent.

True, but athletes at 52 generally don't attempt to do what they did when they were 22.

A pretty poor line up for a special show.

I personally found it embarrassing watching Ray Davies, he was totally out of it, off time and key.

I know he's getting on a bit, but if older vocalists cannot hack it, they should either bring the pitch down to a level for which they can comfortably sing or possibly give up performing live.

Age should not really stop good vocalist still performing live, two that come to mind are Paul Rodgers and Tom Jones - they still seem to belt them out.

It's always funny to read comments around here..
If only you would know how much discussion there is around here in Belgium about programs like "Jools" but in a really positive way...
Over here we have nothing of that caliber and "Jools" is viewed as the ultimate...we can only dream of a show like that with that sort of variety and live-bands in that setting... Musicians are very enthousiastic about it and are jealous of the format and the chances it brings.
You should consider yourselves very lucky..we do.
For those who say "Well, go ahead..you can have him !" : gladly

Not sure why the anti proclaimer comments, these guys with just an acoustic get all types singing along , they are fairly unique in the commercial pop world, think they deserve a little more respect.

Have to agree with the general 'below par' comments on the show. For me the Proclaimers pretty much stole it, 2 Guys and an acoustic.

14K for a Bass...... :o

It would be a better show if Jools could get The Shaggs on it one year.

He could have had Dot Wiggin from the Shaggs who has currently got a new album out:

Way too professional compared with The Shaggs. What a sell-out! ;)

Has Dave Swift ever played the same bass twice?
Err, yes, but have a look at his incredible bass collection on his website ( http://www.daveswift...ges/basses.html ) and you'll see why he may have some difficulty choosing...

I personally don't hold with the view that artists should quit once past their prime (who decides that, anyway?) The beauty of shows such as Jools Holland's is that the potential paying punter can see these artists as they are now and make an informed decision as to whether they are actually worth going to see.
Paul Rodgers and Tom Jones are two singers (particularly Tom Jones) that are famed for their strong voices. My guess is that even TJ would tell you that he can't hit the notes of yesteryear.
Ray Davies, on the other hand, has never been known for his strong voice - more known for its character.

I think the NY eve show was a party, lets sing along to Lola and the Gap band etc. with a few other bits thrown in, and in that spirit it was good.

What the weekly Later show is doing is another debate

A little late on this - not even sure where I've been redirected to!!

Shame on you guys - you mean to say you weren't watching the Gary Barlow extravaganza on bbc1 with the fabulous Lee Pomeroy rocking his Stingray 5 and Rickenbacker - and whoever said the bbc mix the bass to be heard didn't watch this - apart from Mr B's vocals the loudest thing in the mix was the audience and the drum kit - yipes talk about crash cymbals - made me jump more than the firework display which was fabulous in itself!!

After all that excitement we wound down watching jules and were quite impressed - especially with that bass sound - but did you hear the band tuning issues at the start of Lisa Stansfield's all around the world - quite bizarre - it definitely sounded like them not her!!

And what is the world coming to - all is musos not gigging on New Year's Eve ............ Time was when it paid the most for a semi pro of anytime in the year! I blame cheap supermarket booze!!
