bassjamm
Hello people of the bass empire, Have any of you ever played or had any experiences with a Matt Pulcinella, in particular their Level 5 JJ models? If so, please offer me your thoughts. Do they capture some rude honky Jazz tones? Thanks Jamie
fullrangebass
My experience with MPG is through my superb Level 5 (EMG DC40 loaded). Most positive

I'd have it back any day ;-)
bassjamm
I thought Russ used to own one...a nice natural one! I've found one for about £800...is that good? Jam

It was light, well balanced had a full, aggressive, modern tone. Similar to the Shuker I had for a while. I think it was a combo of the EMG 40DC pickups, light (and very resonant) swamp ash body and maple neck/fb, hardware was all Hipshot. Loved the tone (but I guess with JJ pups the sound could be quite different), and I'm not quite sure why I moved it on, other than I traded it (+£) with Russ for his Sadowsky Tokyo. The neck wasn't as wide as the Sadowsky but a bit deeper, more of a "C" shape than "D". I was light and balanced very well as you might expect from the size of the horn It was a lot of bass for the money I payed for it, and up there in many respects with anything I have played/owned/own. I guess MPG's are not very well known, especially in the UK/Europe, so you'd have to think about resale value if you came to move it on, but potentally a very nice instrument for that kind of money. I suppose you would be getting a J bass "on steroids", to which I would ask, isn't that what your "F" is for? GAS eh? Can you get you try before you buy? cheers G ps here's some old pics of mine:
bassjamm
Hi Gwilym Thanks for that mate. Nah, i can't try it before i buy unfortunately, it's in the States! My F Bass doesn't quite bark/honk enough for me really...and to be fair, the F Bass is far more than just a Jazz on steroids, but that's what i'd like! Something like Ari's Atelier or your old Tokyo would be perfect (do you know where either of them are now?)!!! It sounds like they're pretty awesome anyway, but i know what you're saying about re-sale value...they're not known at all really! I only half knew of them from my memories of Russ and you owning one, that was it really!!! Hmm...come to think of it, i'd much rather have your old Sadowsky, or Ari's old Atelier...gargh!!! mr_russ
That MPG Level 5 was a great bass but I really didn't appreciate it enough at the time - It would suit me down to the ground now. It sounded really huge- 35" scale + emg DC's, very nice. I had considered getting matt to build me one of his standard range 5JJ's but I bought a lakland dj5 which is excellent. r
