Not a Hofner bass

I have a Hofner '62 and this is nothing like it - Hofner Violin basses are actually very well made and have quite refined features - wave headstock shape, smaller decal, small guitar tuners, two knob control panel with three sliders, etc. they are handmade basses - at leat the German ones are. This looks like a Shine copy with a fake decal. I'll post a pic of mine for comparison sake Steff.

Great thanks mate. Funny as this one looks genuinely old but I now recall all the Hofners I've seen have two knobs with 3 sliders indeed... A vintage copy perhaps?

Looking closely it doesn't look very old to me - perhaps it's just the design, after the Fender basses the Hofner is surprisingly one of the most copied bass guitars and there certainly were many copies manufactured in the 60s and 70s from the Far East. There were also European versions from brands like Klira and Eko but there's something about the pickups and hardware that makes me think more recent Korean manufacture - Shine, Epiphone, etc.

Have a look here -

With the flame maple and the round headstock, I'm wondering if it's a Shine Hofner copy. But on looking close, the headstock has an even bigger round bit at the end.

(Picture is of a Harley Benton, but I can't find a good picture of the Shine and I think it's identical to the HB).

That very round headstock on the ebay one is typical of no-brand Chinese made basses.

All of that, plus the tailpiece is different too. It does look a lot like one of the Shine or Harley Benton copies. Certainly not a genuine Hofner.

It's back, and while it still says Hofner all over the place, the description does say that this isn't a real Hofner bass.

Though, the seller tells us that 'it would fool anyone'.

So....are we to think he really didn't know what it was?......or was he trying to pull a full on sh1tbag manoeuvre ?

Many people simply see a recognisable name on something and take it as being legit. People are commonly duped - buyers and sellers - by fake goods with authentic looking logos. Old Hofners go for decent sums of money even in these lean times so the seller may not want to believe their instrument is fake....however I see it's ended again.

In another one of his/her listings, he's selling a 'Fender' guitar for £45. It's a Sunn Mustang. This appears to be one of the later ones, not the early ones which are more desirable. Like the 'Hofner' s/he seems to want to emphasise the word Fender' in the listing title, and the unwary could be fooled if they don't look/research properly.

Looking at the kind of thing she/he is selling, they suggest to me someone who should know what they are doing. http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/Guitars-/3858/m.html?item=121248890132&pt=UK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV&hash=item1c3aff3d14&_ssn=tantrumjohn&LH_Complete=1&rt=nc
