I am assuming it's a bass, I'm not a bass player yet but intend to be. It was given to me as being a bass but the guy didn't know much about it at all. So, can you guys confirm it IS a bass, maybe the make if at all possible. Is it a 4 or 5 string please? I could guess at 5 by the holes on the front but that could be totally wrong. Any suggestions what neck & hardware might be right for it, as cheap as possible without being horrible? I'm asking a lot for my first post but it seemed like the place where people could answer the questions. Cheers guys & a Happy New Year! jezzaboy Posted January 4, 2014 Share Posted January 4, 2014 (edited) It is a bass body, routed out for P (precision) and J (jazz) pickups. Looks like a BC Rich body or a copy of one? Looking at the size of the pickup routs, it is more than likely a 4 string but hard to say for sure due to the angle of the photo`s. I don`t know how easy it would be to find a pointy type replacement neck for it but measure up the neck pocket and have a search for one. As for the hardware, Ch Guitars do decent stuff at reasonable cost. Good luck. It's hard to tell from the photo angle but if the two halves of the neck pickup cutouts are the same size then it's for a 4 string. As Jezzaboy says about necks, it'll be just a question of measuring the neck pocket and finding something that fits, and is also the right scale length. KiOgon Posted January 4, 2014 Share Posted January 4, 2014 The 5 holes look pretty much standard for a typical BBOT Fender style bridge, check the measurements, plenty on ebay going cheap. As for neck to fit, 63mm across the heel is a common size, again get measuring if it's a 34" neck it needs, you should find the bridge mounting screw holes are approx 280mm from the edge of neck pocket, (as a rough guide) & it looks like the P routing is definitely a 4 string. When it comes to buildigng guitars, I have built an acoustic from scratch, although that WAS 20 years ago but that pride & joy is still sat 6ft away on a stand and sounds pretty awesome. Couldn't hope to do it again now but I do still remember a fair bit of the theory of it regards scale, etc. My dad is an insanely good electronics guy, ex computer designer/maintenance boss for the UK Met Office. Doesn't quite have a soldering iron for a right hand but he'd help with the wiring. From the advice above, it sounds like it could be fun. And while I have my eye on a ready built one on Ebay already, I might change plans & see what I can do with this body instead. I'll let you know what happens. Oh, this is the one thing I'd never leave a burning building without. It is literally unique. I can say that. I never built another!
