Yep,, most definitely Derek Forbes playing a Fender Precision on Glittering Prize - probably through a dirty great big old Ampeg stack....

In fact, maybe through this cab: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/219527-ampeg-vst-rig-derek-forbes-ex-simple-minds-l400/page__p__2288088__hl__ampeg__fromsearch__1#entry2288088

After the New Gold Dream album (when they had a bit of cash, I suppose) Mr Forbes started using all sorts of other basses: Wal, Alembic, Aria, Vigier spring to mind... :)

I remember going to see Simple Minds play live at the time that Glittering Prize was current and Derek Forbes was indeed using a P Bass with a pick and it sounded great .

To recreate the sound on that record though, what you really need is not just a Precision Bass but also one of the crappy bass amps that were commonly available at the time, like a big Carsboro combo of some description . Such amps had "Bright " inputs or buttons that gave a boost to the scratchy upper frequencies in a manner that made every note you played seem like an endurance test, and if you "popped " a note in a funky fashion( as was very popular at the time) the resulting "clang" would deafen everyone within earshot. Most people would shy away from such a tone , but Derek, to his great credit, exploited it to the maximum on that record and it ended up sounding superb .

Don't bet your house on it...
allmusic.com has Steve Kinch listed on bass for Jim Capaldi's 'Poor Boy Blue'... I've never even heard it, let alone played on it.

Ive met Derek Forbes and talked to him about his P-basses. He liked to use ones from the late 70's so prob had them from new. Also used a fretless one around New Gold Dream and beyond.
I played support to the Minds back in the 90's on a UK tour and Foster was the bassist and another top bloke.

Waterfront has a very nice bass tone, I must say. It gets the spotlight at the start of the song, too.

The main bass line that goes through the whole song is a sequencer although Derek did play it on early version of the song. The bass parts now are the little runs that play over the sequenced bass line.
