Hi All, I am thinking about bidding on this old knackered looking jazz bass as a project. Having looked at it again, I do not think it actually is a Fender (see neck plate on the back of the body). What are your thoughts? Look any good for a project or a waste of money?

Cheers.

The plate doesn't look right to me. The shape seems too 'pointy' although this may be down to the photo. It should also have the Fender 'F' logo stamped on it. It should be a three-bolter but the plate somehow just doesn't look right.

If it is a genuine 1978 J, it could go for a lot of money. It also looks pretty knackered for its age, so I certainly wouldn't want to risk it without having a look at it in the flesh. Is that a possibility for you?

If it goes for anything less than around a grand, it may be a good buy - but obviously only if it is genuine! It has already been modified a bit, and I am not sure the knobs are period-correct?

But if it plays well and sounds good, and you can get it for £300 or less - what the hell!

The knobs are ok for a 78. The neck looks spot-on for the period. The seller has stated what isn't original so he appears to be upfront about the bass. The colour is unusual for a 78 although he does say it is rare. It may even be a faded sunburst. I was wondering if the body is a bitsa with some of the original stuff fitted and some not. It's a difficult one to call. I suppose it depends on how high the price goes if it would be worth having a punt.

Buying any Fender of that age is a minefield unless you know a lot about them. I'd want to see the neck off and also a photo of the pots before going any further. The colour is definitely not faded sunburst though.

I was looking at this too, not faded sunburst for sure

Broken binding on pic 9, I'm surprised by the wear pattern on the rear body pic too. DIY relic perhaps

I've started a thread with a link to this in the 'eBay - Weird and Wonderful' section of this forum where it may get a few more comments.

Yeah. Normally you get a gut feeling whether a seller is a bit dodgy or not. This one appears to be straight-up.

He is also selling a Trace Elliot "prototype" bass. I'm sure I've seen that one advertised before....

Hi
At first sorry about my bad english. I have exactly same kind Fender. There are few things. First Fender used S8*** serial numbers also in -82 and in -82 came cherry sunburst to colour option. It should have white microphone covers and white control knobs. If any of you have any questions feel free to ask:)

I was going to invest in this bass a couple of months ago, tried negotiating with the seller - offering him above what I thought was market value. His idea of what the bass is worth is some measure away from what it should sell for. It's been advertised multiple times by the same seller. I think he was after £1200 at the time.
