I'm doing my music GCSE solo performance soon and I want to know if anyone knows of any songs with extremely complex bass parts so I can get the best possible result. I'm planing to do either of these:

Goodbye Hooray - Red Hot Chili Peppers :http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nTTxWLz-adg
Time Won't Wait - Jamiroquai :http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C_Xy_pD_Or8

They're both pretty mad bass lines in my opinion but I wonder if there's a song with a bass line you know that will really ensure I get an A or even an A*
I can slap and pop to some extent but not a pro because i'm self taught for a year now so i'm not saying no to slap pop songs but i'd prefer it if you avoided them.

Thanks for reading

Showing my age - The Who - live at Leeds, Thin Lizzy and of course Weather Report. They all seem to have a reasonable bass player  . They may not be complex but imo there is much great bass playing in context.

If it were me, I would go with a less difficult bass line that I can nail than a super complex one where there is a chance of slip ups on.

But..

Of course it's all up to you :)

You're examiner doesn't want to sit through long passages of root playing or repeated bars. You'll get nowhere down that road.

If you can play Time Won't Wait like that, then go for it.

Good luck.

You won't go far wrong to nail a few of Derek Forbes bass lines from his Simple Minds days http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yZs_l9hF8IY&list=PL9059BD611EA7E4A5&index=1

Don't know if this fits your thoughts as it's a bit of a repeated groove (but what a groove)

Second that. Shows you can groove too, very important
Listening to 'december 63' (o what a night) by franki valli/four seasons,as I type this. Decent solid groove with some nice tasty runs, and instantly recognisable, fun to play too

Hi FlopalotapusBass, and welcome to BC!

It depends what you mean by 'extremely complex bass parts'. I'm no Hadrien Feraud, but neither of the songs you suggest seems particularly complex to me - there are thousand upon thousands of songs that have far more tricky bass parts than these. Also, if (as you say) you are are doing a solo piece, why not choose a proper solo bass piece, i.e. one that does not require a backing track? The obvious-to-the-point-of-cliche choice here would be 'Portrait of Tracy'.

But if it really is a choice between the two songs you mention, then I agree with chris b - 'Time Won't Wait' wins it by a country mile.

Anyway, good luck with it!

Anything by Rush is a good bet, YYZ is good fun, although for GCSE I'd suggest playing it safe and going for The Spirit of Radio.

Street Life by Randy Crawford has a cracking bass line too! As does Diana Ross' I'm Coming Out.

Sunday Morning by Maroon 5's also pretty good, not particularly technically challenging, but one important thing to remember is that it's not what you play, but it's how you play it.

The most important thing my teacher taught me is that anyone can play the notes, but if there's no feel, then it's worthless.

What are the criteria that you will be assessed against? Is it purely complexity, and if so, who decides how "complex" a part of a piece of music is? Number of notes? How far apart those notes are? Speed? Accuracy? Timing?

Some very basic bass lines are very difficult to get right. Some seemingly complex ones are far easier than they sound...

I still find these two (seemingly straightforward and popular) basslines a challenge to play accurately:

OK, not very "highbrow" it could be said, but who are you trying to impress, and why? :)

The OP posted the same thread in 'General Discussions' and hasn't replied in that thread either.

Perhaps they passed the exam with flying colours or maybe got fed up and took up the vibraphone instead. :D
