A stunning talent, and, as lojo says, a very sad story.

Written, incidentally, by that well-known shyster Sting (see other thread for details) :D

She really was a massive talent and a huge loss to the music industry. She was around for such a short time but made a long lasting impact. I assume Sting is raking it in as well, which is a shame.

Ah yes, one of my all time fave female vocal performances. She does a great People get Ready too.

If you like girly vocals, have a look at this below - its absolutely effortless. Real stripped back and raw. Theres also version filmed on a rooftop in London where Hayley has a chest infection and the rasp even sounds great!

If the topic is sublime, sadly missed singers, may I offer this for your consideration...?

One of the finest, ever, imo. Sadness; gone too soon.

I remember when they used this version for a cancer advert on TV. Gave me goose bumps every time as it was so sad and emotional.

Well this is probably the sweetest voice I have heard.

Eva Cassidy was a fantastic singer. Her version of 'Wayfaring stranger' always gives me the goose-bumps.

I'm a fan of that one too.

But of course, [s]only a covers artist[/s] only ever recorded excellent songs. ;)

I corrected it for you.

Eva Cassidy's Somewhere over the rainbow is now the definitive version I suspect. She did a seriously cool jazzed up version of Route 66 too.

Terry Wogan was the man responsible for introducing her to the masses.

Huge +1 from me.

Love Eva and Sandy too.

Without question my favourite female vocalist, but for me her biggest talent was in the arrangements of the songs she sang, the guitar parts in "Over The Rainbow" are sublime in how they compliment the vocals

I remember being surprised when first hearing the original jazzy version of Route 66, well this version by the writer so I assume it was the original.

Incidentally, Bobby Troupe was also portrayed the army jeep driver in M*A*S*H (the film) who was always saying "Goddam Army". Not a lot of people know that. ;)

Edit - found the Eva Cassidy version . . . . not quite as 'cool' as the Troupe version, but very good nevertheless:

They are great arrangements but they aren't always wholly new. The arrangement of The Letter, for example, owes much to the Leon Russell arrangement for Joe Cocker Mad Dogs and Englishmen,

Heres the link to the sore throat version Linus. The roughness sort of adds to the tone of the song ( works for me anyway!)

Great call on Suzanne Vega - I think her first album is an absolute classic. Love the minimal production on it, and there isn't any more instrumentation on it than there needed to be. That really captured and framed her vocal and song writing ability perfectly.
