The OH is taking me the Edinburgh for a wee holiday for my birthday. I'll be there from Sunday 9th to Wednesday 12th, February. Has anyone got a gig in the city on these dates or if not, where's the best place to check out some bands in the city center.

I've not been up there for nearly 40 years. If no one is gigging, I'll just have to go to the zoo and stab a panda so help save the wildlife. :D

This is a handy gig guide. http://www.gigguide....burghmonday.htm

It won't show Feb gigs until 1st of feb but you'll get an idea of whats available. Mcnach plays in multiple bands in Edinburgh so you'll probably manage to catch him playing. Whistlebinkies is the best venue for really good quality bands.

I also recommend the Jazz Bar. Lots of Jazz and lots of other stuff too. I recommend the 17 piece big band on Mondays and the 101st airborne on tuesdays for some Hedrixy funky stuff. All top notch musicians. http://www.thejazzba...-weekly-events/

Cheers for that. I'll check it out nearer the time.

No listings for Feb as yet.
No, can't see anything mainstream listed as yet, I don't live there anymore so you may get a local BC-er coming in with ideas. Binkies does have something on most nights & it's a decent enough venue. Depends what you're into and whereabouts you're staying.
Or  - you may have to settle for something more touristy..........like the Witchery Tour http://www.tripadvis...h_Scotland.html

Whistlebinkies has music every night, but it depends what kind of thing you're into. Weeknights in there can be a bit hit and miss IMO. If you're just looking to wander in off the street and catch a gig though its probably your best bet.

There are quite a few pubs that do the folk-music thing, some of them are really good (if you like folk music...).

I don't mind folk music if it's done well. I'm more into rock, blues, soul, infact anything but badly played.

For the folk stuff check out The Royal Oak and Sandy Bells.

Whistlebinkies has a fairly good range of stuff--from singer songwriters to Rage Against The Machine cover bands. From what I remember they have music fairly evenly spread out across the evening---6ish, 9ish, midnight-ish.

+1

It's on Chambers Street, same street as the National Museum of Scotland. That's well worth a look too. Entry to the museum is free and it's AMAZING.
