TheGreek Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 I'm listening to "Oil on Canvas"...reminded me what a Bass God Mick Karn was. I was going to bump the thread commemorating the anniversary of our loss (4th January) on the day but forgot. Even so it doesn't hurt to recognise the man's genius. Here's "Cantonese Boy" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7srxD4Q9z_M For those who aren't too familiar here's the whole "Oil On Canvas" album http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MdW-PHs2Fic Quote
mentalextra Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 What a great talent, what a great loss Quote
madshadows Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 Damn didn't know he had passed away, loved the TIN DRUM album went it came out, sad loss, thanks for reminding me what a great player he was Quote
ezbass Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 One of the torch bearers of fretless bass in any genre, and with a tone and style all of his own; sadly missed. Quote
mentalextra Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 I think this thread should be in general discussion, is it in 'off topic' for any particular reason? Quote
TheGreek Posted January 19, 2014 Author Posted January 19, 2014 Not really - maybe the mods would like to move it.... Quote

White Cloud Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 (edited) Mick Karn was one of the TRUE greats of the instrument....because he had vision, creativity and had the guts to put it out there. Music is art, there are no rules...and Mick Karn painted richly textured tapestries of sound on the bass that most can only aspire to. Edited January 19, 2014 by White Cloud Quote
Woodinblack Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 Indeed, very inspiring and after buying a fretless bass last year spent quite some time trying to play some of his stuff. The one you posted, Cantonese boy is a great track to play along with Quote
toneknob Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 Check out his solo work too, I love the album Bestial Cluster from the mid-90s. Here's the title track. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cPIRIYGQmEE Quote
gub Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 Brilliant player, defiantly one of my influences Quote
steve-bbb Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 Dont forget Bill Nelson's Chimera http://youtu.be/G8Gqqb3IPmU Quote
Clarky Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 (edited) I really like his Liquid Glass album with Yoshihiro Hanno, especially the track Seafall (which has a beautiful rubbery bass line that, try as I might, I cannot replicate): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QyZEDYOj-Wc And here's another track from the album: Edited January 19, 2014 by Clarky Quote
ead Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 ...and of course his work in Dali's Car with that singer chappy from Bauhaus. Quote

Grassie Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 The one bassist who made me want to pick up a fretless. I have been spending the weekend in our dining room varnishing woodwork and have had various albums playing while working. Today has been a "bass masters" day - Jaco, Mark King, Marcus Miller and Mick Karn's "Titles" album. Just amazing. A true artist - inventive beyond belief and fearless in execution. Greatly missed and I'm sure there will never be another like him. I will be buying another fretless this year I think. Quote
Cairobill Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 Ahhh, they broke the mould with Mick Karn. A genius... Quote
leroydiamond Posted January 19, 2014 Posted January 19, 2014 Totally unique player. One of the giants of bass for sure. He did not rely on speed, thumping, tapping or what ever your having yourself. He just seemed to express his inner essence onto the fretboard. Genius Quote
BetaFunk Posted January 20, 2014 Posted January 20, 2014 Mick Karn was great. A wonderful bass player who didn't seem to conform to any musical style. I saw him live with David Torn who was again another great musician. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ld1nhs4r28Q Quote
