cocco
Do we have any jaguar faithful on here? I'm finding myself drawn to them recently. What are people's opinions? Are they over complicated? I'd be replacing my Lakland Bob Glaub if it did happen. Can the jag get close to a P sound with the series/parallel switch? Is there a big output difference between active and passive modes? roonjuice
well, having gigged one for a good while i find them with about 3 really good, usable sounds. In full output, all wound up, i believe jags are the most aggressive sounding bass fender make. There is not too much drop in output active vs passive, just the top end sizzle obviously. Its quite good for a solo boost scenario or finger to slap scenario. The necks are then thinner end of the jazz scale and i find the poly quite sticky if rockin hard. Consider getting the electronics shielded if u get one tho, because the can buzz;) really good basses imho
roonjuice
also, u wont really get a p sound out of it tho
cocco
Thanks Roon, does the series parallel switch fatten things out? It's probably only ever going to be used for playing classic rock covers, maybe I should have a look into the p equipped Troy Sanders version too. I suppose a set of humbucking J pickups could be installed though.
roonjuice
outstanding balls out rock bass. especially in black. the sound is more cutting and growly/gnarly than fat but it is fairly tameable. the controls are quite easy to knock when playing tho
cocco
I do like the black one, with a black pickguard it would look evil with all that chrome. I like the 3 colour burst and tortie one too though.
The Walloper
I have a deluxe jag. Best thing for me is the neck, it plays so well. Plus they look stunning. Similar to a jazz in tone. I never use the in active mode, but when in use it gives a low and treble boost. As roonjuice has mentioned, they are quite noisy and I've had to put extra grounding. Especially noisy in active mode. basshead56
I love my Jag (Hot Rod Red w matching headstock). Bought it new last year (but it'd been hanging in a store unsold for about 4 years) Looks ace, Amazing slim Jazz neck and a really dark snappy tone. I rarely use mine in active mode, but when I do it's just for that little extra boost. It's like an aggressive Jazz bass tone in passive and the series parallel switch gives you the option to fatten/darken the tone. I had the Squier VM first and loved the PJ pups. I played that more than any other bass I've owned! Then got the Fender and A/B'd them. The Fender just had more bite and a lot more tonal variation. Heartbreakingly, I sold the Squier after a couple of weeks being 'Two Jags'. A couple of other posts have mentioned a noise issue - I am aware of a few people having this problem but can safely say mine is 100% perfect without any extra shielding. It's my main gigging bass at the moment and I always get heaps of questions about it at gigs. Haven't tried the Troy Sanders or the Modern Player Jags but I doubt they'll top the Deluxe series. Get one! Them's my two cents anyway.

Of course it's been modded a bit like Fender CS '60's pickups etc. (the stock cheapie ceramic are unacceptable IMO) And I'd say it has more than three good settings, depends on how many music styles your playing. [/quote] That's lovely! I've been thinking of potential mods all day. Bridge upgrade, shield everything, either Duncan stacks or model Js, concentric pots, maybe replace the active part with something else. It's so moddable. I've never kept a fender standard. nash
I've just looked at the price of the Troy Sanders Jag and I can't believe how much it is for a MIM. Are the original series still made in Japan?

cameltoe
I've had GAS for a Jag for a while. Never tried one though. It needs to be a full-fat Jap fender model though- I need all them switches. 😀
machinehead
I have an American Standard Jaguar. It has a PJ pickup configuration, is active and passive. It's lightweight and well balanced and has a fantastic and very useable range of tones. It has a superb neck - the same dimensions as a Jazz neck. What's not to like? Frank.
