TheGreek
Help me out...I don't use a plectrum so I'm a bit dumbfounded.. I'm looking to order some plectrums but the manufacturers can't offer me anything heavier than 0.9mm gauge - is this too light for bass players?? Advice please... franzbassist
I've got some spare Rotosounds (the ones Bruce Foxton uses) if you fancy a couple just to try? They are "heavy", 1.1mm I think. No charge Edited January 21, 2014 by walbassist
sblueplanet
I like to use a plectrum with a bit of flexibility, about 0.7mm If just starting to use one, a bit of flex is easier.
Si600
I've always played with a plectrum and use Dunlop 0.60mm if that helps. Edited February 3, 2014 by Si600
bonzodog
Ive always used Dunlop Yellow 0.73mm and they feel great. I would not really want to use anything else.
RhysP
I use Pickboy Edge carbon nylon plectrums, 1.14mm for bass & guitar.

discreet
0.9mm is heavy! It's Herco Flex 50 for me. Edited January 21, 2014 by discreet
0175westwood29
i used to use the blue triangle dunlop picks, not sure of thickness, always worked for me, just use what feels comfortable. andy
Michael J
I was trying with a Dunlop orange 0.60mm today. Feels better on bass than I remember on guitar.
PaulWarning
there's loads of options on this one, and none of them are wrong it's all down to personnel preference and the type of sound you want, I play in a punk band so like a tone with a bit of bite to it, I use a 1mm nylon Dunlops
Billy Apple
Being a life long pick player I swear by Jim Dunlop Tortex .73 Just the right balance of firm for digging in, flexi for speed and rubbery grip-ness. Love them and always a couple in my back pocket Edited January 21, 2014 by Billy Apple

Big_Stu
Dunlop Stubby 3mm
joeystrange
I've always used .88mm tortex ones. If I were you I'd go to your local music shop and buy a few different picks and see what you find most comfortable before you go and order a bunch. There's no 'too thick' or 'too thin' for bass. Whatever you feel most comfortable with is the best.
xgsjx
Played with a pick (not exclusively) for years & will use anything between 0.4 & 1.5 mm, but my fave is the yellow .73. Get a few different pics & take em to your next rehearsal.
TRBboy
Can't do bendy picks, I use a purple Dunlop Tortex 1.14mm for the songs I play with a pick. They last for frigging ages too!
paul_5
Aluminium TeckPick ones. It's quite rare for m to use a plectrum, but these are the bad boys I always go for. http://www.jimdunlop.com/product/TECKPICK®
lojo
Dunlop hug triangle green .88 or blue 1.0 I think Can't seem to hold standard sized picks for long , but the triangles are great

I've haven't played pick for quite a while, but I played a couple of songs in rehearsal tonight using my index finger nail as a pick, it sounded ace, I love pick style, damping and down strokes sound cool. Bassassin
Hardly use 'em these days, but when I do it's a Jim Dunlop 1mm nylon. Slightly flexible for more feel & a textured gripping area for sweat resistance. Jon.
BigRedX
As you can see the variety of picks in use is as broad as the variety of strings... Herco Flex 75s for me.
Cat Burrito
The beauty of plectrums is you can get lots of different makes with a variety of different gauges that work well so mix it up fairly cheaply. I used to think it had to be a thick one but some plastics work well as light as 0.6 for me. I'm not precious these days and often just nab one off a guitarist if I feel a song warrants a pick and I've forgotten one.
Bolo
Grip-ex .88 from IntuneGP for me. Used to be .83 but they stopped making those, these are better Edited January 21, 2014 by Bolo
tedmanzie
.73 here too, and a normal size pick, not one of those giant triangles! Each to their own but I find those extremely horrible
