louseskaman Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 I play 98% of our set without a pic, but to get the nice 'chug' sound that a couple of songs sound great with, I use Jim Dunlop Nylon 0.88mm. not to soft...not to hard....just right.......luvly jubbly!! Quote
Spike Vincent Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 I've just switched fro Herco Flex 50's to Jim Dunlop nylon .73mm. Quote
KingBollock Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 I used Dunlop 3mm Big Stubbys for 20 years, then switched to the nylon version a couple of years ago. Recently switched to the Primetones, again in 3mm. I find the Primetones even more versatile than the Stubbys. Quote
Handwired Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 When I use a pick it's a .88 nylon Dunlop. The nylon picks have an embossed logo, which helps grip. Quote
Oopsdabassist Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Dava control picks for me http://www.amazon.co.uk/Dava-Control-Tips-Combo-Pack-Picks/dp/B003NX2P0E/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1390376564&sr=8-10&keywords=dava+control+pick Blagged one off a guitarist a few years ago, and never looked back, nice and grippy so I dont squeeze so tight, I used to get cramp when pick playing. I'm not a natural pick player and like others only use em for a couple of songs a night. last ages too, bought my last pack of 6 about 2 years ago, and still got 4! Quote
Grangur Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Thanks for this guys. I've been trying some really nice looking wooden ones I was given as a pressie. Just came to the conclusion that picks aren't for me. Now I know why; wood doesn't flex. I'm going to try some plastic. Thanks Quote
TheGreek Posted January 22, 2014 Author Posted January 22, 2014 I'm ordering a load of custom picks (BC logos) to give away as gifts at the next Herts Bash - I was hoping for a consensus - I'll see if they'll mix and match... Quote
Not wanting to put a damper on your scheme, but IME the picks used by most of the suppliers offering a personalisation service are the plectrum equivalent of Rotosound strings. As you can see from the previous posts most of us here have much more discerning tastes (just like strings)! Quote

Muzz Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Jim Dunlop Nylon 88s here...for about the last 35 years, tried and tested Quote
Conan Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Pretty much anything! I usually nick them off guitarists... Quote
BobVbass Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Tortex 0.6mms here - and they never break - they wear down after a while but don't ping off in the audiences eyes Quote
uncle psychosis Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 I have never understood how anyone can bear to use thin, floppy plectrums on bass. In my opinion it just feels horrible and sounds weedy. 3mm big stubbies for me. Quote
41.2Hz Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 (edited) Fender Heavy 346 for me. Like others I only use picks for a few songs, so I like that I've always got a 'point' whichever way I grab the pick. Edited January 22, 2014 by 41.2Hz Quote
iamtheelvy Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 (edited) Dunlop Tortex Blue 1mm for me. Somewhat torn between the standard and the triangle shapes though... Edited January 22, 2014 by iamtheelvy Quote
Adrenochrome Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Dunlop Ultex 0.73mm for me. More grippy than most, and have a different feel - quite flexy at first but get a lot less flexy when you dig in. Really good for fast picking. Quote

dudewheresmybass Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Either Dunlop max grip 1.5 or tortex 1.14 dependant on mood Quote

KevB Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014
Hardly use 'em these days, but when I do it's a Jim Dunlop 1mm nylon. Slightly flexible for more feel & a textured gripping area for sweat resistance. Jon.
+1 Been using them for years after trying various others that didn't quite feel right to me. I only seem to get them in black though which isn't great being dropped on a dark stage. Quote
Prime_BASS Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Dunlop gator 2mm for me, plus in a bag it's easy to tell the used ones apart from new ones. Pretty hefty but I get the sound I want. Quote
