Rack compressor question

I have recently got more into using distortion and am feeling the need for a compressor. The one in my Behringer V-Amp Pro is bloomin' useless, and it's in the wrong place, being in my amp's effects loop. Unfortunately my distortion units have to go before the amp, they won't work properly in the effects loop, which is a pain in the bum, but I want a compressor to go first, but the problem I have is that I want a rack compressor.
I was looking at the DBX 266xs and the Alesis 3632, to give you an idea of the kind of prices I am looking at, but neither of those are suitable for direct input from a bass. Is there a rack compressor that doesn't cost a lot that will take an input from a bass? I would really, really rather not have to go with a pedal.

I am fairly sure the answer is going to be no, but in thought it wouldn't hurt to ask. Warned you it was a stupid question, so be kind.
