What distortion / overdrive pedal would get closest to the tone Duff has during the intro and guitar break of this track?

I believe Duff uses the MXR M80 Bass di+ to achieve that sound.

I always figured it was just a GK head with gain cranked a bit. I could be wrong though

Yep, it`s part of his "armoury" - on their old site (may still be there) his tech mentions the M80. But having a GK amp and a bass with P/J pickups are also major components of the sound - get that classic crisp GK sound, both pickups on, then add the dirt.

I've ordered an MXR M80 from Thomann. I can get close to his tone with my BB414, both pickups on but I just need that extra distortion he adds at the beginning and during the solo to fill the sound out a tad.

Keep your eye on the distortion box (lower right) and listen to the difference between GK+distortion and the GK on it's own
