Fantastic player, I had a chat with him after a gig he did with the Impossible Gentlemen. He's a really nice bloke too.

Ah Mike (Walker) is a very good friend, done loads of playing with him, he was very excited to tell me Steve was doing his gig, and then Steve Rodby too... Lucky Mike although fully deserving of the company being a world class player himself!

I do enjoy his playing, though I haven't always been a massive fan of his tone. Having said that, I liked his sound much better on this clip from 2013 than some of the other material I've heard. Not a trace of noodling either, which is great. And Carla Bley is always awesome!

His playing on this song is something I keep coming back to (and some of the faces are worth a chuckle too....). Solo at 2.10 is very pretty.

I approached Steve about writing his biography. Someone else was already doing it so I lucked out but his email was lovely. A true gentleman. I have been a fan for years and some of my favourite bass solos are his.

Jolly good for you. Most enlightening.

Oh I see, it's one of those threads where even the mildest criticism is frowned upon..

Swallow's solo on 'Alfie' from John Scofield's 'En Route' cd is one of the most beautiful solos ever played on a bass and 'Shoe Dog', off 'This Meets That' is another absolute gem. Don't forget what a monster composer he is as well.

Not frowned upon at all but it just seemed a pointless comment.

I am sitting here listening to Swallow (with Carla Bley and Andy Sheppard) and he makes me want to get a five string fretted bass (E-C) and play like Jim Hall.
