Dad3353
It has arrived already! There's me hoping it would arrive on time for Wednesday's band practice :-D It's the first Cajun I've seen up close, but the quality seems good, and a carry case/rucksack is included, which is perfect, as he will need to get it home on the bus.
Let's see his reaction Wednesday..?

Big_Stu
The cajon sounds like a good call, maybe for options or future reference I've bought a couple of what I can only call "white noise cymbals" as drummers' presents. Can't find a link just now but it was kinda like a pair of hi-hat cymbals but stand mounted & they're shaped like a pair of old German Iron Crosses. The sound was as the name implies. Bought them at Johnny Roadhouse in Manchester but they don't seem to have them in just now.
Roland Rock
Cheers Stu. Btw, is the first syllable pronounced 'cajon' as in 'cabbage' or 'cajon' as in cage? I want it to seem like I know what I'm talking about when we present it to him

English version = Box 'cajón' has many translations; the closest in this context would be 'crate', but also 'drawer', 'bin', 'coffin', 'locker' or 'till' Edited January 25, 2014 by Dad3353
Big_Stu
A bit under the budget but my son loved the drumstick pencils I got him. As drummers do the first thing he did with them was rattle out a shuffle on the nearest table top, which pretty soon shatters the lead in them, so they fall to bit when you sharpen them
Roland Rock
Thanks. Didn't want to sound like a knob, like my friend who pronounces a particular Italian bread "foo-cay-sha"
Matt P
good call on the Cajon, our drumer has one and it's great for quiet acoustic stuff (or it can be mic'ed as well) I bought our drummer a tambourine for his 30th, he always rants about badly played tambourines and i said he was old enough to own one now, he though it was a joke present but it get's used on about 25% of our songs! (it was one that clips on to the high-hat stand, i tried out about 5 in a proper drum shop and bought the one that sounded right) Matt
Zenitram
ka-'hon /ka/ as in cat /hon/ as in Honiton Stress on the /hon/ And yes it has many meanings but here just means big box. Edited January 25, 2014 by Zenitram
MiltyG565
In a fit of generousity, I've plumped for Wayne's cajon. It's just looks soo nice, is on offer, and has a bag included. Thanks All
When I saw this thread, I thought "Cajon"! I was late to the party, but you got it sorted anyway! Somebody said a cajon was a novelty - I very much disagree. It's a great alternative to a full drum kit, especially for acoustic gigs and small venues. That have a hole cut out of the back of them, so it can be miked, if needs be, but it also allows the sound of the drum to emanate naturally. Most drummers really seem to love them, and I can certainly see why. My aunt, a few weeks ago, asked "What are those box things they all play now?" "They are called Cajons" "No no no! They are like a little box, and they sit on it and play the front of it. They do that instead of drums" "Oh... I don't know then."
Some say it's ka-hon, and others ka-hone. I don't know exactly which is the linguistically correct pronunciation, but I prefer ka-hone. I suppose it doesn't make much difference. No, seriously; one can get just about any reasonable kit to sound good if you know how to tune it, and equally get a lousy result from a top-end kit, too. Same as bass, really. It's all in the player.
