Funny looking headstock ? on Precision

Owned a few, never recall the machine head over hanging the head.
Mad sander attack, or something else....

I would have said that the head is smaller than it should be. Look how close the decal is to the edge as well.

I've no idea why it would be smaller though!

It is remarkably clean as well for a 36 year old bass that would have been poly laquered.

1978 wasn't exactly the high water mark for quality control at Fender.

Actually if you look at the only wide picture, the headstock just does not look right at all ?
Am I seeing things here ?

The bridge isn't setup properly either, but that's hardly a real problem. Did 70's P-Basses come with white pickups? It does look in very good condition for a bass that's nearly as old as me
