Roland Rock
Anyone know anything about this rather 'interesting' bass? Did someone go nuts on a Thunderbird? tonyxtiger
I think this was the "axe" bass. It was used in the Tommy film but beyond that I don't have much info.
EliasMooseblaster
This may answer your question! http://www.thewho.net/whotabs/gear/bass/bass7174.html Just underneath the Thunderbird entry: "Designed by Peter Cook* from a Gibson Thunderbird-style neck, with body in the form of a pole-axe, black and cream stringing, two Thunderbird pickups, two volume and one tone control, 34″ scale." *Presumably not that Peter Cook... Roland Rock
Great page thanks. Must say, I prefer the Fenderbird
EliasMooseblaster
Yeah, me too. The Ox was, without a doubt, my favourite player, but I don't know how much I like the look of some of his more...erm, "exotic" instruments!
Cosmo Valdemar
I love this bass, my school books were covered in it. I did consider putting together my own but the ergonomics decided against it. This bass pops up in one of my favourite films, Horror Hospital. Perhaps Peter Cook made a few, or JE gave it back? http://youtu.be/pL_4qP-CbIA Edited February 4, 2014 by Cosmo Valdemar

Peter said John usually had a rough idea - bit of a dodgey sketch and a bag of bits - litterally. He left Peter to make some sense of it. Having said that, even with Peter's input, that bass has got to be the ultimate "Diver"!

Horror Hospital was made in 1973 - prior to any footage of JE using the bass that I'm aware of! I can't imagine it being a tribute bass either - it looks spot on to me, and reference material must have been scarce back then. It's hard enough to find decent pics of the bass these days!
