Bass-ic Beginnings

Hi I'm Loula from the southwest.

I've arrived here hoping to be united with a Westone Rail someday... Come on, a girl can dream.

In the mean time I'm very interested in hints and tips, well meaning criticism, banter, and information on lightweight bass guitars. Finger callouses and broken nails I can cope with - but my shoulder really farkin hurts after a while, and I refuse to sit down!!! So yeah, advice on that front especially welcomed.

Thanko mucho! But there's a lot of us out here. Just dive in and experience it.

(Just to be sure: you know why I'm both gay and a fanny tickler? It's because I'm terrible at playing with a plectrum, and another finger player on BC mentioned how he had been called both "gay" and "fanny tickler" for that by some non-appreciative listeners. :) )

best,
bert

Standard Disclaimer: it's not that I'm not terrible without a plectrum
(but then again who in his right mind can even think about playing a bass when there's fannies around).

My goodness; a sudden flurry of responses!

Bert - I had no idea. Tickling gay fannies could have been your day job for all I knew - thanks for explaining it to me :) Fannies are indeed distracting things which makes me wonder how far I'll ever get with this bass playing business, but I'mma try my best.

Grangur and John, my greetings and thanks to you both for taking the time.

Shoulder pain? Get a very wide strap - something like a Minotaur makes your bass seem lighter. Worked for me.

Welcome Loula :) +1 to what discreet said for a wide strap!! I use one of these; http://www.gak.co.uk/en/levys-m-4-gf-3.5-garment-leather-black/24587 works great even with my 13.5 lb Jazz. When even that gets too much, a Hohner B2A does the trick @ 4.4lbs!!! You'll find as much help and advice as you can handle from a great many very helpful, experienced people on this site. But, you may find it gets a bit addictive! especially the porn and for sale sections ;)

Why has it taken this long for someone to tell me there's porn here?!? This place has everything ;) oh guitar porn yes I see.
Going to try making my own strap as my conservatory is like a tannery; loads of leather hanging around waiting to be made in to something.
I've met a lot of Johns in my short time here, I might have to stick to usernames to stop me from getting confused. Or just call EVERYONE John... It's a nice name after all. Thanks for the advice John :) x

I had a friend with a place like that, although he turned the leather into gimp masks and straps for use in his dungeon. Takes all sorted I suppose, was never really my idea of a good Saturday night.

Welcome, and make good use of that leather with a nice wide strap.

Cheers,
Rich

If you want a really lightweight bass guitar, then the Aria Sinsonido 690 is your friend. Looks fab, weighs nowt, sounds good. Fretless model available. They come up here every now and again, about £150 for a decent one.

Or you could get an Ashbory, or an Ibanez GSRM-20... the GSRM-20 is very short-scale (28.6"), decently made, looks like a four-string guitar, fits a guitar gigbag, weight in proportion. It's a pretty good deal for the price, too. (But if you get a new one, change the strings ASAP... the factory ones are not good.)

Hello and welcome Loula

Another +1 to the steinburger copies (Hohners) like the B2A. Awesome basses, very light, very portable. Can be a bit unnerving if not used to headless basses

Also think personally that you will find that the weight is not necessarily the biggest factor- the shape and distribution of the weight within the bass (and therefore where it "rides" on you) will probably make a bigger difference to the shoulder , and wide straps are awesome.

Never heard of the westone rail before, but a quick google and it looks very cool.

See you aroudn the forum!
