Graham
Definitely look used, your budget will go a lot further, I'd look at Warwick (not Rockbass), you should be able to get a bolt on model easily with your budget. At the top end, you might be able to get a G&L USA L2500 or Stingray 5 as these seem to go for between £700-800 used, so if you're not too fussed on condition and negotiate a bit you may be in luck. Yamaha are also another brand to look at, a mate of mine picked up a 6 string Yamaha recently that's great for about £400 If super jazzes are more your thing
steve-bbb
should be able to pick up a TRB1005 easily in that price bracket and hopefully have enough left over for a pedal or something basschat.co.uk/topic/96631-the-yamaha-trb-porn-thread/

BassBus
If you want to go new, have a look at ESP LTD or Cort. Really good quality for the price

Jellyfish
Definitely look into Ibanez. You can get their hand-crafted, Japanese made range for under your budget and they're one of the nicest 5 strings I've played. Spacing is quite slim though (which I loved, but you may not), so I'd also go for the USA G&L if you're prepared to wait for one to come up for sale. Machines
2nd hand Lakland would be a good choice. Depending on your tastes a used Joe Osborn or 55-02 would be superb value for around £
IanA
Make sure you play a Warwick before you buy, 17mm string spacing is tight and can be difficult, nicely put together though. Personally I would save up and spend a bit more. Lakland skylines are a decent buy second hand along with sandbergs but they can be heavy. wrinkleygit
if your close to mid devon you're welcome to try out my warwick fna 5 (german built) well within the budget, from all the headed basses I have owned I think warwicks are my personal favourites, mike b

TRBboy
Look out for a used Sandberg Basic Ken Taylor 5, or even a Basic 5. Great, handcrafted basses for not much money.
Geek99
You can get a used legend 5 for a lot less than your budget

Mattmit
I would go for a sterling ray 35 for that money. A second hand one should be 4-500.
JTUK
2 absolute key points..... Buy S/H and by seen and played. The B defines your bass...and you never know how good or poor they are until you hear it. then....... I'd make £700 your start point for looking but the higher the better, IMV... Laklands DJ, if you can find one, and JO's are good albeit 35"..... A £1000 may point you in range of a Metro and other cool stuff and then I think you could be in a different league, bang for buck...
