bonnp
Hi, i have a musicman usa sub and was wondering what strings i could buy that was give the a,d,g strings a heavier sound? not sure whats on at moment, the e string sounds good. i am playing stranglers stuff and sounds good on the E but the others sound a bit too "high", any advice would be helpful... i am fairly new to playing bass so any other advice about amps would be good as well, practising on a roland cube 30w thanks
LukeFRC
lower that side of the pickup a smidge. and DR fat beams are good, but pricey
chrismuzz
Flatwounds would do it!
tonyxtiger
You could try a heavier gauge on the ADG but I think it's a stingray problem myself. I owned a 70s an 80s and a 90s one. They all do that. I stopped using them for that reason. There are plenty of happy stingray users out there but I couldn't get past it. JellyKnees
Flatwounds would do it!
Not for playing Stranglers stuff they wouldn't! You'll be wanting a set of Rotosound swing bass.. pretty sure that's what JJ used back in the day. Funnily enough I've just gone back to these myself after many years away because I wanted more beef to my sound and they are doing the trick nicely. Not everyone's cup of tea I know but I like 'em. Lozz196
Heavier gauge. It may not seem much, but going from 45 - 105s to 50 - 110s makes a big difference. An even bigger difference going back the other way, it`s almost like all the low-end has gone. As above, Roto Swingbass 66 Steels, try the 110s, I used them for ages on Jam, Clash, Stranglers etc. The Roto Nickel Rounds are nice, they have a slightly warmer sound but for Stranglers especially, go with what JJ used. Amp-wise, well depends on budget and what you need the amp for. We`re always quite happy to offer (many) suggestions. Welcome to the forum btw.
