64's, 74's, 84's, Hammers? I have a pair of Wizard jazz pickups here but I've no idea what type. The only identifying marks on them is a N and B on the neck and bridge pups respectively. The Wizards site is no longer running which makes identification difficult, I don't know if Mr Wizard is replying to emails these days of if anyone on here knows him.

Is there any way to tell what these are? I could measure their DC resistance which I suppose may help, I shall dig out my multimeter tomorrow!

You'll be lucky, Mr Wizard wasn't too keen on emailing pre retirement. :D

He was much more a phone sort of chap.

Sorry I can't help, like you said measuring resistance and getting some comparisons sounds like the best bet.

I was thinking of selling them as I don't know when I'll ever really get round to building up a Jazz bass that I had in mind to do some day, so it would be nice to be able to say what they were! I'll measure them later.

Resistance will help, mainly because that is pretty much the difference between the '64 and '84 models. They may also be a custom wind of course. Mine are "'74's" because I asked for something in between the two, with a fatter bridge pickup for my 70's spacing :) I also have a standard '84B sitting in a box... there is no visual difference at all!

If anyone has any clue what the resistance should measure (or has a pickup sitting in a box and access to a multimeter ;)) that would be a great help!

This should help!

Sixty-Fours
Simple effective - old is best, dc for Bridge 8.6 k ohms with the neck coming in around 8.2 k ohms these pickups are a great replacements for vintage pickups or for those who want that vintage sound without 'vintage costs'. Supplied with cloth covered cables and black covers.

Eighty-Fours
Darker, bassier and generally dirtier than the Sixty-Fours, these pickups are overwound to lower the overall tone. Loud and proud these pickups will drive any group. The bridge has a dc of 11.5kohms and the neck 11.0 k ohms. Complete with black covers and black and white hook-up wires.

Hammers
Struggling to get that dark crunchy tone you've always wanted? Lacking that oomph to get you over the line? Look no further, Hammers are loud dark and dirty, yet retain conventional construction - handwound, Alnico 5 magnets and attention to detail.

My 84`s have 84 written on the the bottom and dont have any foam on them, perhaps you could prise the foam up a bit to see if theyre marked up accordingly.

And you were correct! They are '84s - in which case I think I will hang onto them, if I was going to build a bitsa I it was the heavier overwound sort I would be after!
