Favourite underrated bassist?

I love finding bassists who are aren't your typical Jaco or Mingus who are awesome!

Mine is this the bassist from Brand New, criminally underrated, that riff is just great.

Probably Cliff Williams of AC/DC. Incredible discipline to play those lines and not want to branch out with a run or two, yet no, he hangs back , locks with the drums and lets the vocs and guitar do their thing. AC/DC may well have been a very different band without that approach.

A big influence on my bass playing was Phil Chen. He played for a long time with Rod Stewart (but don't hold that against him).

I can't say I've ever heard of him being rated (over or under) but I always liked Pat Badger's basslines in Extreme, true most of them were probably written by Nuno Bettencourt but to be able to keep up with some of those unison riffs on bass always impressed me.

Oh, where to start! Gary Beers (INXS), Nick Seymour (Crowded House), Ben Kenney (Incubus), John Deacon (Queen), Dan Roberts (Crash Test Dummies), Jeremy Toback (Brad). Loads more. All tasteful players, but never play the obvious. +1 for Pat Badger - his tone on Saudades De Rock is monstrous (monsterous?) Whatever...

Ok, so maybe not Mr Deacon (not amongst bassists anyway), but Pat Badger seems to elicit little recognition generally. His groove with a pick is unstoppable. Can I also add Phil Spalding? Fanx.

That's a good point, and the same can be said for Ian Hill of Judas Priest as i've been learning his bass lines. His rock solid approach suits the band.
There's plenty of underrated bass players, or guy's that fail to get mentioned. I'd like to put forward Peter "Mars" Cowling ex-Pat Travers band

We don't get much, fortunately, of the 'I don't think they're much good' deriding of other players here, therefore, it is more a case of the lesser mentioned or relatively unknown players. For me it's Chris Childs of, amongst others, Thunder, The Union and many others; a top bloke with a touch and style I borrowed a lot from when I was developing my own style (he was a regular player at a small, local venue). Of the better known players who don't get a mention very much I would add Bruce Thomas of The Attractions and Roscoe Beck.

I think Krist Novoselic is massively underrated.
He may not be the most technical player in the world but listen to any Nirvana stuff and there are a lot more subtleties in his playing than you realise. Especially apparent if you can get hold of some multi-track stuff.

I think Rex Brown of Pantera/Down gets overshadowed by the guitarists in those bands, but is a remarkably good player in his own right (turned down a jazz scholarship to go on tour with Pantera); as can he heard on Five Minutes Alone by Pantera and Ghost Along The Missisipi by Down.

I would also put Caleb Schofield of Cave In and Dave Edwardson of Neurosis in the underrated camp.

James Lomenzo, IMO he is an awesome bassist but you never really here much about him .

Fred 'Sonic' Smith of Television (and original bassist for Blondie before replacing Richard Hell when he left Television)... I also think that Este Haim is a great bassist. She really drives the band and adds an extra dimension to the band. A very similar mould to Tina Weymouth.

Kermit Driscoll, bass player with Bill Frissel. One of those guys with no showboating techniques but who can play his ass off when he needs to. I can usually hear it is him in two notes.
