Spoombung Posted February 26, 2014 Posted February 26, 2014
I saw Pere Ubu last year and was very impressed with Michele Temple, very disciplined playing on her lovely G&L Asat. You can see her in action here from just a few nights ago: http://culturebox.francetvinfo.fr/sons-dhiver-2014-pere-ubu-147937 You've got to skip through Mr Thomas's stream of consciousness ravings for a minute or two before they start.
. I watched that gig on line last week . Yes, she's a very confident player. Quote
Cosmo Valdemar Posted February 27, 2014 Posted February 27, 2014 To echo some earlier posts... Jim Lea Colin Hodgkinson Dee Murray Quote
beegee Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 Paul Simonon of The Clash. Never heard him play a bad bass line. Quote
beegee Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 I also saw an amazing bass player who's name I don't remember play with Tajmahal. Quote
Big_Stu Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014
To echo some earlier posts... Jim Lea Colin Hodgkinson Dee Murray
The problem with Jimmy Lea's "legacy" is that here's virtually no worthwhile footage of him at his best, ie. "live". This was mostly down to Noddy Holder's refusal to do it; his reason being it would ruin the spontaneity of the set if there were hitches or retakes. By the time MTV or YT was available the Slade bubble was long burst. However, if you want to see his fingers blur, anyone remember Saturday mornings "Get Fresh"? BetaFunk Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014
To echo some earlier posts... Jim Lea Colin Hodgkinson Dee Murray
I'd say that Colin Hodgkinson is one of THE rated bass players out there. Certainly never underrated. Quote
BetaFunk Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 Could someone just say Jaco, James Jamerson, Duck Dunn, Pino, Flea or Carol Kaye? You don't know how much enjoyment that would give me and my life would be complete. Thank you. Quote
Jazzneck Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 (edited) John McVie - underrated? IMO, yes. This is an example of absolute technique and discipline. Try it, it ain't as easy as you think it is. BTW - he was 23 years old when this was recorded, Peter Green was 22, Danny Kirwan was 19. HMX Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 (edited) Yeasayer bass player, Ira Wolf Tuton (cool name too), seems to be a phenomenal player. Check out the pitch-shifted intro and the bass solo outro! And all on a freakin' fretless. Edited March 5, 2014 by HMX Quote
dieseldalziel Posted March 6, 2015 Posted March 6, 2015 For me Garry W Tallent, underated? hard to say but I don't think he gets the credit he deserves, seemingly effortless playing, always serves the song,so solid. Quote
Guest Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015 (edited)
My other pick would be Roger from Less Than Jake who regularly impresses me with quite intricate lines whilst sharing vocal duties.
In a similar vein, Chris #2 from Anti-Flag does similarly complicated basslines while jumping around and yelling angrily about politics. Like they do. spectoremg Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015 +1 for Nick Seymour; love his playing and the bass always gets an awesome sound/mix on Crowded House albums and +1 again for Tom Fowler, I've only heard him on Steve Hackett's 2nd album (Please Don't Touch) but the playing's great. Quote
Japhet Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015 Not exactly underrated, but with the amount of adulation James Jamerson (rightly) gets, I often think Bob Babbitt deserves a lot more acclaim than he gets. Quote
HazBeen Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015 I think we are all underrated to an extent, bass playing is just not as "sexy" in many people's eyes. I have several in mind many already covered in this topic but I nominate Tim Commerford of RATM and Audioslave. With my 90s rock cover band we play a lot of their songs and he just has so many cool lines. And Patrick O'Hearn, great fretless player and my favourite Zappa bass player. Quote
louisthebass Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015 I'll add Chris Chaney (Alanis Morrisette, Jane's Addiction, Robben Ford): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qfi6ilQdsU8 Quote
Mykesbass Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015 Four years on, it's still Tommy Cogbill for me: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/188373-underrated-bass-players/page__st__330__p__2007517__hl__underated__fromsearch__1#entry2007517 Quote
wateroftyne Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015 Rod Clements of Lindisfarne... http://youtu.be/46ZPzgPTmho Quote
scalpy Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015 Johnny Colt of the Black Crowes and Krist Novoselic of Nirvana. Both had a great sound and the ability to absolutely nail the part to the drums. Quote
mentalextra Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015
Charlie Tumahai
+1 sadly missed too Quote
Maude Posted March 7, 2015 Posted March 7, 2015 (edited) I am going to add Victor Damiani who played on some of CAKEs first album and all of their second, Fashion Nugget. I love cake and Gabe Nelson, who Victor replaced and then handed duties back to, is awesome but for me Victor just has that something extra. Doesn't need to overplay, just play what the song needs but when he does lay down a serious line he has such groove. Edited March 7, 2015 by Maude Quote
Thunderbird Posted March 8, 2015 Posted March 8, 2015 Cant remember if I put Tom Araya he is a fantastic bass player and never really gets much recognition Quote
HMX Posted March 8, 2015 Posted March 8, 2015 Nate Mendel from the Foos been mentioned yet? Really tasteful player and part of such a tight rhythm section with Hawkins. Quote
Dazed Posted March 14, 2015 Posted March 14, 2015 (edited) I'm amazed Ben Shepperd ( not the pillock off tv) from the mighty Soundgarden hasn't been mentioned. Fantastic bass lines. Not flashy at all and one of the few low hangin bass players I can take seriously. The guy from everything everything also has some killer lines. Edited March 14, 2015 by Dazed Quote
