tom1946 Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 Well, I just got this at 7.30am, I simply cannot believe the quality of this bass!! The finish is flawless, the neck is as straight as an arrow and there is very little of the sharp fret edges, certainly not enough to make me want to file them down. anyway pics: It arrived with a low action and perfect intonation, can't believe it for 100 quid Pickups are what you expect for Wilkinson jazz, quite punchy and solid, I don't do honk or slap in a church so you'll have to make up your own mind about it. The tone control is very smooth and gradual in operation. Tuners are wilko's as well as is the bridge, both work very well. Weight? It's about 9.5 lbs, it's american ash body. Comes with D'Addario XL strings fer cryin' out loud, Anything I would change? hmm.. Fender sticker maybe? Nah, I'm not a name tart. So overall it's astonishing value for money, I am going to sell some of my 'better' basses now. Buy one today... no buy two! Quote
madshadows Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 Lovely looking bass, they are great aren't they, amazing value for £100, I love my natural maple neck version of it I bought a month ago, haven't stopped playing it, have fun with it John Quote
theyellowcar Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 That finish is incredible! The grain!!! Quote
tom1946 Posted February 17, 2014 Author Posted February 17, 2014 I know, thanks John I will. Can't put it down. Quote
yorks5stringer Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 Very nice looking Bass indeed. I'm waiting for my PJHTR5 from Thomann this week, I very much doubt it will be delivered at 7.30 am out here in the stixx... Quote
Immo Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 If they'd do a Jaguar-style bass, I'd be buying one right now. Quote
dazza14 Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 This looks very, very nice, lots of good reviews from other buyers of this bass on Thomann website. I also like the look of the PB-50 SB Vintage Series, looks like the 1950's single pickup P Bass... VERY nice. Anyone got any info on these babies?! Quote
tom1946 Posted February 17, 2014 Author Posted February 17, 2014 Yes, I ordered one of these as well but they're out of stock for a few days. Quote
clashcityrocker Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 Bloody hell that first pic certainly got my attention, that looks stunning! Quote
tom1946 Posted February 17, 2014 Author Posted February 17, 2014 Peach actually Stunning innit? plays as well as it looks. Quote
SlapbassSteve Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 Stunning! I wish these had been available when I started, would have saved me a whole load of grief... that 50's Telebass looks beautiful as well! Quote
fusdepilee Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 You know what, the Fender J/P body shape has never done anything for me before but your first picture may just have started changing my mind! For £100 that looks amazing. Quote
redstriper Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 Thanks for this review. Basses seem to be getting cheaper by the day - how low can they go! And the Telebass is only £78.00 How does the sound compare to the J&D jazz that you returned? Looking forward to hearing your thoughts about the Telebass... Quote
tom1946 Posted February 17, 2014 Author Posted February 17, 2014 Yeah Redstriper, pickups are slightly less powerful but they sound more authentic to my ears, ash body is very slightly heavier but it sits easily on my shoulders. Might be a week or so before the other one turns up, I'll keep you posted. Quote
bagsieblue Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 Christ, that does looks nice....been looking for a nice bass to drop an ACG EQ 02 into, is it good enough for that??? Quote
RandomBass Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 Holy moly that does look nice. The Wilko parts alone would cost in excess off £100 to buy. Nicely done.... Cheers Geoff Quote
Annoying Twit Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 It looks beautiful. Is that the original pickguard? Quote
iconic Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 How do the neck dimensions compare to the J&D Tom? Quote
tom1946 Posted February 18, 2014 Author Posted February 18, 2014 Ok, neck is very similar ( sorry I can't remember your name cos I'm old ) better finished and nowhere near as sharp. Strings make a big difference too. The pickguard is what it came with, feels as good as a usa one to me. I only unscrewed the pickguard to take the cellophane off so I haven't looked at the routing to see if you loom would fit physically but the bass feels worth the effort. HTH. Quote
iconic Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 I found my J&D neck to be jazz width but deeper than a fender/squier jazz neck....would that apply to your Hog? Looks the dogs Tom....good news about the fret edges too! Quote
