badboy1984
My band recently starting to cover this song as part of our set, I can play the bass line spot on without a problem but the drummer says my tone is not exactly the same as Sting's tone. To start off I use a P/J bass so that shouldn't be a problem, I think the bass have chorus effect but not 100% sure and it also sounds like a fretless as well ...... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MbXWrmQW-OE Edited February 18, 2014 by badboy1984
Highfox
yes a fretless with a touch of chorus to my ear. I'm not sure when Sting started doing it in the police but I read that on recordings he often double tracked his bass parts with blended electric and stand-up. Where's our fatSting man when you need him?
xgsjx
I'd go with chorus too. Sounds like he's also using a pick.
Marsy
Apparently a proper P bass and a proper SVT will do it! Ha ha http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D2l7jyiiQvs&sns=em

Lozz196
There is something indefinably special about those basses. I kick myself that I`ve bought/sold 2 of them now.

NoirBass
Having read this thread a few days ago I took my chorus (Analogman mini) and tried it on my gig last night. We played Message in a Bottle and Walking on the Moon. Both sounded so close to the track, I was stunned. I'm using a stock J bass BTW, not fretless. Cheers for the tip chaps, the Chorus will come to all my gigs now and be on for all the Police tunes.
