Lakland Decade vs Fender Pino

Well, not really a versus but after Dave asked what the Decade sounded like in the Lakland thread I started doing some recordings of different strings (because to be honest I forget what they sound like myself!). When I bought this I couldn't listen to any recordings beforehand as nobody had posted any so I thought it might be a useful comparison for interest.

I often end up with an expensive string-fest with Decade basses as I like the rounds and the flats and can't decide.

The Decade had an old set of Sunbeams on when I bought it:

I've also tried Picato flats

I've got some Thomastiks but not done any recordings to match with those and I don't want to mess about anymore for now or I'll go mental. Personally I think the Picatos are very close to the GHS (and Lakland flats), just a little bit darker. Sunbeams are my favourite rounds anyway so I'll keep them handy.

I still don't really know which strings I prefer on the Decade, but I think I'll stick with the GHS for a bit.

I've also added the TI's - couldn't resist...it's either them or the Sunbeams I think. Soundcloud has been a right pain today so maybe try again later and see if its working better.

Well, Jas, they all sound pretty good to me but I think I'd pick out the GHS and the TIs as my preferences.

I tend to have neck pickup on full, bridge pickup on c70%, and tone about half way back.

I think Pino's son, Rocco, plays that bass now with Jessie Ware.

IMHO, the lakland sounds better than the Pino [b]by far[/b]. By the way, I have seen videos of Palladino at the studio, always with a Lakland....

Interesting, I like them both for the different flavours they offer. Although a Decade with the Picato flats is pretty much the sound in my head
