jassbass
I have a passive bass would like it to be active.would an pre amp pedal do a similar job to it rather than putting an active pre amp in bass?its a lakland dj5.thanx?
bakerster135
Yep, get an Aguilar Tonehammer or a Sadowsky outboard preamp. Performs exactly the same function as having an active onboard preamp, and you don't have to carve your bass up!
paul_5
Yup, either of those two are lovely preamps.
Hi jassbass, What's your budget? Then we can make relevant suggestions for you. If you can wait and save for the Sadowsky then I wholeheartedly recommend that. I have one and it's great. They do turn up 2nd hand every now & again on here for good prices and in good condition. All the best, Jon
jassbass
Under £100 I think.wont know for sure til payday friday.what about hartke attack? Dont really need distortion
lou24d53
I'd be interested in hearing peoples opinions on the Sadowsky or the Tonehammer pedals when compared to the MXR M80 DI+ which I currently have. Lately, I'm not feeling that the MXR is doing it for me, but I don't know if its based on pure tonal 'fact' or rather simply me having pent up GAS for trading up for something better or newer!! I had been looking at the new MXR Bass Preamp pedal, but reading the reviews and threads so far, it would appear that all I'm going to achieve is more room on the pedalboard...so it does seem rather pointless in going from the M80 to the M81 for little tonal benefit. uncle psychosis
I like the Hartke Bass Attack. Its built like a tank, has some decent features, and sounds good.
lou24d53
I should add, I've just ordered the Darkglass Vintage Microtubes pedal this morning off Bass Direct to give me a warmer sound. Perhaps there's no need whatsoever in moving on from the MXR and I should simply let the GAS subside?!
bakerster135
Hartke Attack is more modelled on an amp preamp, not an active bass preamp, if that makes sense!?... Worth keeping an eye out for an Aguilar DB924 too (version before Tonehammer). Can be had within your budget, I've got one and I never leave home without it! I use the Sadowsky for my clean sound and the M80 for my dirty sound though but would happily use the M80 for clean too. GAS is a terrible thing

If a cheap amp style pre amp sounds good to you then the Behringer BDI21 is hard to beat for the money: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Behringer-Modeler-Guitar-Effects-Pedal/dp/B000KIPUQG/ref=sr_1_1?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1393330672&sr=1-1&keywords=behringer+bdi+
jassbass
Thanx guys.think a bass preamp rather than amp preamp.not set in stone though. Are the sansmap bass preamp or amp preamp.thanx
HowieBass
You can boost output and do tone shaping plus a lot more with a bass effects console - Zoom units get quite a lot of love and the B2 is within budget http://www.amazon.co.uk/Zoom-B2/dp/B000YGJ68M/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1393331748&sr=8-2&keywords=zoom+b2
dannybuoy
Check out the new MXR M81 preamp: http://www.jimdunlop.com/product/bass-preamp If you're looking for something small and simple, SFX may be an option: http://www.sfxsound.co.uk/microeq/ http://www.sfxsound.co.uk/b3/ A good cheap option though is a Zoom MS-60B - it's a cut down version of the B3 and has some very good clean DI/preamp models, as well as loads of other FX. paul_5
Or this looks like a lot of kit for the money: http://www.thomann.de/gb/eden_wtdi_direct_box_preamp.htm Eden stuff is very highly regarded too.

Guinness21
Curious about the sadowsky. Got a diamond bass comp, and I've heard the tone hammer can narrow your tone instead of beefing it when combined with it. Also interested in the new mxr m81. I am not excane
I'd recommend an on-board preamp like a Bart or Aguilar. They can be had for right around your budget, especially on ebay and other assorted discounts from online vendors.
jassbass
Are the on boards hard to fit?thanx
Truckstop
Some, like the John East J-retro/P-retro are designed to drop straight into an existing cavity. Some may require drilling for extra knobs and a cavity for batteries to be dug out. Those types should be fitted by a professional! Personally, I'd go for an on the floor one. You may risk reducing the value of your bass and you may want to buy a new bass in the future and you'll have to chop up the old one AND the new one! Try a Behringer BDI-21. Great value for money and sound just as good as a SansAmp. Truckstop
