CamdenRob Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 What's the deal with gold hardware... It looks awful. There are two lovely sixers in the marketplace at the moment that are both ruined by a gold bridge and tuners, making a £2K bass look like it came out of a kinder egg. It's got to be in serious competition with the single cut as the worst crime against bass aesthetics. I know I could just change them but thats a faff and extra expense... Quote
neepheid Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 Can't say I'm a fan either. Fair play if some people like it, but I find it a little tacky, a little ostentatious. Not necessarily cheap looking though. It's too much. Quote
Immo Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 Gold on a simple bass (PB, JB) in black or white (especially combined with rosewood, cream bound fretboards with block markers) is the killa. Kinda pimp-ish, but nonetheless classy. Gold on cherry red also works, especially when it goes old and matte or even slightly corroded. Quote
BigRedX Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 The Japanese love it. Try and find any decent quality MiJ bass that doesn't have gold hardware. Quote
thodrik Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 Can't say I'm a fan myself either. Horses for course though etc. Quote
Roland Rock Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 Yeah, the old nouveau riche gold bathroom taps scenario ;-) It's an immediate repellant for me. Quote
LiamPodmore Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 It can work in very rare situations, but 99% of the time, it looks as cheap and tacky as a white pickguard on a black bass (IMO of course) Liam Quote
EBS_freak Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 (edited) I agree with regard to gold and black... Edited February 25, 2014 by EBS_freak Quote
TheGreek Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 Horses for courses...beauty is in the eye of the beholder...and so on... Quote
BassTractor Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 Good example: Bad example: and IMHO of course. I feel gold on black can sometimes be OK. Gold on black plus yet another colour though is a different matter. Quote
Conan Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 I think it works on Spectors and some Yamahas... but they are quite bling instruments to start with Quote
bartelby Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 (edited) I actually replaced the chrome hardware, on my Warwick, with gold. I think it looks ok against the bubinga body, what other people think is of little importance. My SB Elite came with gold hardware. Again, it looks pretty good. CamdenRob Posted February 25, 2014 Author Posted February 25, 2014
...what other people think is of little importance.
This is of course the bottom line... In bass as it is in life. Taste is subjective shock horror... Personally when I see a bass with gold hardware it makes me feel a little bit ill Quote
bartelby Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 (edited)
Personally when I see a bass with gold hardware it makes me feel a little bit ill
to be honest, it has the same affect on me most of the time. But there are basses out there that look lovely with gold hardware. SB Elite Black & Gold A gloss black Wal (which is probably a crime in itself to like) Edited February 25, 2014 by bartelby Quote
charic Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 Just wouldn't look as good with any other colour hardware IMHO Quote
Subbeh Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 There just isn't another feature that puts me off a bass as much as gold hardware. It can make even the classiest bass look tacky and cheap. Quote
dannybuoy Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 I normally can't stand gold on a bass either, except for on this Warmoth SG I used to own: Quote
floFC Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 I have no preconception. I works on my Hohner B-Bass which has a dark wood body and neck - a bit like in dannybuoy's picture above. Although it doesn't have gold knobs - that's pushing it a bit Quote
floFC Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 Silly question maybe, but is gold hardware actually gold plated? Quote
dannybuoy Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 Mostly, yes. It can also just be polished brass, or anodised aluminium, or just painted. Quote
Maude Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 My black Yammy BBG5s has all gold hardware which is just tarnishing slightly and it looks awesome, any other colour just wouldn't look 'right' . Quote
Myke Posted February 25, 2014 Posted February 25, 2014 (edited) My TRB has gold hardware.. It is sexy [sharedmedia=core:attachments:133488] Not the best photo at all but still! Sexy! Edited February 25, 2014 by Myke Quote
