DogHammer Posted February 27, 2014 Posted February 27, 2014 (edited) This isnt a great picture, but the only one I could find of my recent Jazz.... Too much gold? ha. CHRISDABASS Posted February 27, 2014 Posted February 27, 2014
What's the deal with gold hardware... It looks awful. There are two lovely sixers in the marketplace at the moment that are both ruined by a gold bridge and tuners, making a £2K bass look like it came out of a kinder egg. It's got to be in serious competition with the single cut as the worst crime against bass aesthetics. I know I could just change them but thats a faff and extra expense...
I have to agree about the gold hardware! Just can't get on with it visually no matter what wood / colour combo i try with it, gold just doesn't work for me. Quote
Ou7shined Posted February 27, 2014 Posted February 27, 2014 This is probably why it woks for me ... Quote
Truckstop Posted February 27, 2014 Posted February 27, 2014 +1 on the RBXJM Charic!! Brass bridges look great I think, on any colour. I think when you get gold machine heads and knobs and frets and stuff it gets a bit silly. Loving the porn in this three by the way! Truckstop Quote

DarkHeart Posted February 28, 2014 Posted February 28, 2014 Think im in a minority here, i currently own 3 basses with gold hardware although i think combined with the right colour it works well My V My ZZB My Jazz Quote

Gold hardware is much maligned on here but then often anything that's not a Fender Precision is ill appreciated also! I have four basses fitted with gold plated hardware and two of those I had made like that! Variety is the spice of life! Cheers Ed Quote
GregBass Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 I can live with the gold hardware (it's fitted to my Bass Collection fretless), but I agree with the original poster about single cuts. I always wonder why the luthier didn't bother to finish the top bout. Coyote ugly - in my opinion, of course!! Quote

molan Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 (edited) Gold looks great on some basses and not so good on others. Chrome looks great on some basses and not so good on others. Black looks great on some basses and not so good on others. Are there other colours? If so they look great on some basses and not so good on others. . . Edited March 5, 2014 by molan Quote
peteb Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 (edited) Actually, I think that generally, only chrome looks right on traditional ‘Fender’ shape basses. On more modern designs I much prefer gold (or black) hardware… Edited March 5, 2014 by peteb Quote
icastle Posted March 5, 2014 Posted March 5, 2014 I've never really thought about it - I had to go look and see what I've got. Two with chrome. One with black. One with gold. Quote

Dapper Bandit Posted March 6, 2014 Posted March 6, 2014 You know what I don't like the look of? Gold bridge and tuners with black knobs. You know what my main bass came with as standard? Thing is, money spent on changing hardware just for the colour feels like such a waste I have to get on with it. The overall quality of the instrument should more than make up for any cosmetic shortcomings. Quote

Some basses look right with gold- Pedulla, Spector, Alembic- some basses look right with chrome - Fender , Music Man - some basses look right with black - Warwick Thumb. You just have to exercise some taste and judgement. Some folks do have shocking taste, though, and very poor judgement. Without naming any names, I am often horrified by some Basschat member's ideas of what is stylish. Still, each to their own, I suppose. Edited March 6, 2014 by Dingus Quote
