Can anyone recommend a set of medium gauge , dark sounding , not going to chew up my lovely rosewood board , not too bright rounds please ? That's assuming such things exist …. :)

I've got some Rotosound nickel roundwounds (RS66LDN) on one of my basses and like them.

Yes, for a more vintagey sound these are great.

Think DR Highbeams are my faves.

I am currently trying out D'addario Pro Steels on a couple of my basses, so far so good but need to do a few more gigs to be able to make a comparison with the DR's.

Ha yeah ! :D The bass has Flats on at the moment but I'm thinking about about using rounds . I want as warm a sound as possible but with a bit of crunch , but minimal finger on string noise . The sound I hear in my head is James Jamerson crossed with JJ Burnel ( Nice'n'Sleazy ) Warm and Crunchy !!!!

I guess a lot of it is down to whichever Amp\Rig is being used . I only have a MB 150 combo at the moment , so that'll have to do

Thanks everybody :) So many strings , so little cash …. <_<

I'm after a warm , deep sound , without too much zing …….

Roto Nickel Rounds, once they`ve lost their initial newness are just like this. That`s why I used them for the past year or so. They also, once they`ve lost that initial newness, retain the rest of the sound for a long time.

I use Status half rounds on fretless. They are rounds ground down to be smooth as flats. Less tension and a bit more zing than Chromes.

D'Addario half rounds are even brighter I think. Might be worth a shot!

You could try tapewounds. Don't let the nylon tape put you off, they have a wonderful rich depth, they're bright enough for most applications, very comfy and less zing than traditional rounds.
