mike 110
Can anyone recommend a set of medium gauge , dark sounding , not going to chew up my lovely rosewood board , not too bright rounds please ? That's assuming such things exist ….
gjones
I use DR Hi Beams which are great and not too bright sounding. I always found Ernie Ball slinkys to be not overly bright sounding either.
HowieBass
I've got some Rotosound nickel roundwounds (RS66LDN) on one of my basses and like them.
Muzz
Just put a set of DR Lo Riders on my Dingwall - not too sparkly, just dark enough...

mike 110
Thanks everybody So many strings , so little cash …. I'm after a warm , deep sound , without too much zing …….
gary mac
Think DR Highbeams are my faves. I am currently trying out D'addario Pro Steels on a couple of my basses, so far so good but need to do a few more gigs to be able to make a comparison with the DR's. The bass has Flats on at the moment but I'm thinking about about using rounds . I want as warm a sound as possible but with a bit of crunch , but minimal finger on string noise . The sound I hear in my head is James Jamerson crossed with JJ Burnel ( Nice'n'Sleazy ) Warm and Crunchy !!!! I guess a lot of it is down to whichever Amp\Rig is being used . I only have a MB 150 combo at the moment , so that'll have to do
stingraybassman
I have just switched to Chromes on my Precision, just enough sizzle to keep me happy. Bit of overdrive might give you the crunch you're after.

They also, once they`ve lost that initial newness, retain the rest of the sound for a long time.

dannybuoy
I use Status half rounds on fretless. They are rounds ground down to be smooth as flats. Less tension and a bit more zing than Chromes. D'Addario half rounds are even brighter I think. Might be worth a shot!
chrismuzz
As far as nickel strings go my favourites are Ernie Ball or D'Addario. The D'Addarios seemed to last a lot longer!

Don't let the nylon tape put you off, they have a wonderful rich depth, they're bright enough for most applications, very comfy and less zing than traditional rounds.
