Hobbayne Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 For the umpteenth time last weekend while singing and playing, the strap came off leaving me clutching the bass while trying to finish the song. I am now considering the straplock route. There are quite a few different ones on the market and I,m a bit overwhelmed by the choice. There are some cheap plastic ones by Dunlop and more expenisive Fender ones which I assume I have to fit to the guitar myself? What does the Basschat world recommend?? Quote
MB1 Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 MB1. I prefer my Straplocks Schaller ...Not a Dunlop type of guy. Quote
chris_b Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 I've been using proper Dunlop Straploks, not the plastic ones, for 25 years. Never had a problem. If you can find Allparts Straploks they are Dunlops at about half the price. Quote
ratman Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 I've been using Schallers for ever. Straplocks are essential. As a quick fix, the rubber washer from a Grolsch bottle do a fair job too. Quote
deanovw Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 I had a bass drop at a gig once. Since then I have always used Schallers. Quote
bonzodog Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 I get rubber washers from my local hardware shop, the same size as the Grolsch bottle rubbers. Simply put your strap on then place these over the top. The only problem is you need to really leave your strap on all the time so as not to bend the washers. Sometimes you may need two or three washers together to bulk it out but its such a cheap option and its never let me down. Think I paid £2.50 for 50 of them which will last a very long time Quote
ped Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 These are my fave. They're more pleasing than the Schaller type and they feel safer, to me anyway. http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?url=search-alias%3Dmi&field-keywords=marvel%20straplocks Quote

My Nate Mendel came with strap locks... They came straight off and will live in the gig bag as long as I own it! Edited March 7, 2014 by skej21 Quote

BigRedX Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 The rubber washer method makes it very hard to get the strap off the bass when you want to use it on a different one though... Quote
toneknob Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 (edited) Grolsch bottle washers on all my basses. never had a problem. Like this bloke: And this one http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sFgFFNXahcg Edited March 7, 2014 by toneknob Quote

lozbass Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 I have both Schaller and Dunlop straplocks and find both easy to use and install. I don't really have a preference and have one strap with the fittings for Schaller, and another with those for Dunlop. If I was to be picky, I'd say that the Dunlop spring clip (for the strap end) can be a bit fiddly, but it's really no big deal and I've found the company to be remarkably helpful - customer care is excellent. JapanAxe Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 Schallers for me, although I did have one that unscrewed itself during a gig. No bass-dropping cataastrophe, just tiny components rolling around on the stage during pack-up. Fortunately I found all the bits! Quote
UglyDog Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 (edited) Schallers all the way for me, I still have and use the very first ones I bought nearly 30 years ago. EDI: I too had the self-unscrewing thing at a gig once. A couple of drops of threadlock did the trick. Edited March 7, 2014 by UglyDog Quote

alyctes Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 Schallers. Not that I actually have much need of them, TBH. PS: I don't like Grolsch. Quote
Bolo Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 Schaller or Grolsch-loks. Had a Ernie Ball lok break without cause, dinged the trans-teal MM. Bastards! Quote
Roland Rock Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 I've tried proper straplocks, but still prefer the rubber washers. As above though, only practical as the straps never leave my basses. Quote
Mr Arkadin Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 I Schaller (is that a verb?) all my guitars and basses as I can afford them. Then you can just use one strap for all if you like. Doing means it's one less thing to worry about going wrong at your gig (like you don't have enough worries already, right?). Quote

Lee Carter Posted March 7, 2014 Posted March 7, 2014 Schallers for me, had the unlock issue once but that was due to using extremely thick leather straps more than anything else Quote
