BassTractor
+1 on Roundabout, as I think it's the first song that made me aware of the Rick at all. That and that it's a great track. Dunno whether it's a Rick or a faker, but I like the sound on Bold as Brass by Split Enz: http://youtu.be/lAoiZL7dHkY
Bilbo
They may already have been posted but for me it's Greenslade 'Time and Tide' (Animal Farm), Rush 'Hemispeheres', all early Yes (Yes, Time And A Word (when it comes in at 0.46 on Dear Father), The Yes Album). They may have been posted already but I cannot see most of the attachments/links posted above.

Annoying Twit
Dunno whether it's a Rick or a faker, but I like the sound on Bold as Brass by Split Enz:
Nigel Grigg's brother Paul Davis (stage name) said that Nigel had a 4001 before he joined Split Enz. http://www.rickbeat....d/pauldavid.htm In the video for My Mistake from the same album, Nigel appears to be playing a Jazz bass. There's then always the question of whether the bass he's playing in the video is the same one that he played on the track. PS: For Neil Finn, one thing about being a well known muso with a long career is that even when you're in your 50s, there are still videos of you as a teenager wearing heavy makeup all over the net. Edit: Here's Nigel Griggs miming with his Ric 4001 in about 1972 or 1973. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uLtczpnT0lQ Edited March 11, 2014 by Annoying Twit

spongebob
Many thanks, Mr. Moose! It's available to buy through Amazon, iTunes (only £3.16), etc., and also can be streamed through Spotify, Google Play, and others. It's called 'Bring It...' Amazon charge a fraction more (£3.56) - they all choose their own pricing! Perhaps I should stop pushing the free option....!! While I was looking for a suitable Fat Goth track to post I noticed some others where the bassist is playing a Fender, but he still sounds exactly the same. Maybe the Ric isn't quite so distinctive after all?

Certain tonal characteristics of the bass will probably still come through - e.g., people buy Precisions "for the thump," or they buy Rics "for the clank" - but you can radically change that tone through various means. Which probably explains why no one can decide whether Geddy was playing his Ric or his Jazz on Tom Sawyer!
For that kind of tone it seems to me that it's as much about the distortion ( what kind, how it's applied, and how much) as the bass itself. A Rickenbacker has a naturally growly tone , but if you start adding distortion that unique character is diminished somewhat as the distortion is a bit of leveller when it comes to the finer points of the tonal differences between the unaffected sound of individual basses. So in that respect I am not surprised this guy sounds the same on a Fender. I know someone who sold a Precision Bass to Chris Squire and he was amazed that when he presented it to him that Chris proceeded to pick it up, plug it to his rig in and sound exactly the same as he does on his famous Rickenbacker. BigRedX
TBH you're right. Wind the treble up and play aggressively with some distortion and that sound is there irrespective of the bass used.
Beer of the Bass
While I was looking for a suitable Fat Goth track to post I noticed some others where the bassist is playing a Fender, but he still sounds exactly the same.
Likewise, I was thinking of posting some of the old Sensational Alex Harvey Band stuff, as Chris Glen used a Ric a lot and often sounded great on record, but watching some live footage I realised I wouldn't be able to tell which was the Ric and which was his single-coil Precision. I'm sure that if I sat and listened to a player swapping from one to the other I would notice the difference in sound, but there is a definite overlap in the way a given bass player can sound on both instruments. Dingus
In the right hands, Rickenbackers really have such a glorious tone. I just wish I could get on with them , but I never could and almost certainly never will. Someone aught to make a bass that sounds like a Rick... but is better to play. spongebob
As a good 10+ year Ric player - with a few diversions elsewhere - I can only state for personal opinion that my playing on any other bass, doesn't sound anything my sound like a Ric - I played a P for a bit last year, and my sound, well, sounded like a P! So much so that I soon moved straight back to a Ric.....
