KevB
I know someone who sold a Precision Bass to Chris Squire and he was amazed that when he presented it to him that Chris proceeded to pick it up, plug it to his rig in and sound exactly the same as he does on his famous Rickenbacker.
I can quite believe it. From this you would deduce it as supporting the 'it's in the fingers' or in this case 'it's in the rig' or a combination of both. 3below
As far as I know this isRic - remember him discussing Ric vs P bass and effect on playing style. Saw him using Ric with Acoustic 370 Malvern Wintergardens 1970s. The album is one of my all time favourites - Vagabonds of western world. Inspired me to buy a Ric in the late 70s. Green Alsatian
Absolutely fantastic call! At the end of 'The Rocker' on the UK Tour 1975 live album, Phil says his guitar (the P-bass) keeps going out of tune and that his Rickenbacker recently broke. chriswareham
Played with these last year...
Ooh I like that - psychobilly meets horror punk. The band name does bring back bad memories of a few nights at the Slimelight[1] though ... or the mornings after at any rate. Conan
No Spock's Beard yet?!?!? Dave Meros also plays on this... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_pCw3Aw9yyk And wasn't Pink Floyd's "One of these days" played on a Ric? Outstanding bass intro. KevB
I would have mentioned Meros much earlier but I recalled how heavily modified his ric was so didn't know if it really qualified. I think he sold it to help fund the band's last record, he wasn't playing it on the tour last year and he actually didn't sound quite like 'classic Meros' to my ears either. Seen them a couple of times now - firstly he had the F*****r Mike Dirnt (must admit it sounded good), secondly his Jetglo Ric (a '73 I believe), the replacement for his original Fireglo 4001, stolen some time after the initial reformation. Just wish he was more audible on the new records...... Edited March 24, 2014 by icastle Link fixed.
HMX
Was 'Holy Bible' by Manics recorded with a P-bass or a Rick? Perhaps a Rick on a few tracks like Archives of Pain... Low End Bee
TBH you're right. Wind the treble up and play aggressively with some distortion and that sound is there irrespective of the bass used. spacey
No doubt about it, they are a craftsman instrument, in the hands of a novice player, you sound worse than playing a easier to handle bass. But put one in the right hands and you have some of the great tracks we have heard so far.
