bobbytodd
ever since I started playing bass ive always used a pick.but now ive decided to give playing with my fingers a go.the thing is I cant seem to find a strap hight that works.if its low its comfortable on my wrist but I get a lot of fret noise with the strap raised I feel as if my picking hand is at the wrong angle.any hints or advice Edited March 15, 2014 by bobbytodd
Prime_BASS
What ever is comfortable. Usually you should have strap length so the bass at the same height standing as when you are sitting. If something is hurting something is going wrong. I can play regardless of height but usually have it just a bit higher than if I was sat down. Chris Sharman
^^^What he said I have been in the same position as a former punk style pick player and now being a finger player and found that the position of the bass sitting was comfortable so now have the strap set at that length. Give that a try. End of the day whatever feels best but that worked for me.
Diablo
Standing/sitting gets the base neck plate around your belly button so maybe use that as an initial guide? Adjust up and down a bit to suit your arm length, Yorkshire being short and Neanderthal being on the long side. Also depends on bass weight and balance - what are you playing? SteveK
Unfortunately, having your bass at the perfect height for your fretting hand will mean a far from perfect height for your plucking hand, and vice versa... bass height is a compromise. You can minimise the discomfort on your wrist by making sure that the inner lower part of your plucking arm is not resting (or close to) resting on the bass, and moving your elbow away from your body, this should reduce any angle between lower arm and wrist. bobbytodd
that might be where im going wrong I tend to rest my forearm on the top of the bass so my wrist is almost at a right angle
Delberthot
I use a neoprene strap and my bass sits almost at a 45 degree angle so everything is straight Not a very good pic but it gives you the idea
Roger2611
I think your fret noise is being caused by your hand being in the wrong position, when you play with a pick the edge of the pick clips the string up and down, your fingers should be doing the same thing.....if your hand position is wrong you will tend to hit the string towards the fret causing the unpleasant noise. I was predominantly a pick player for exactly that reason but I seem to have refined my technique to eliminate the fret slap nowadays
