JPJ
Hi folks, Now as some of you may know, I am a fan of using compression to even out my occasionally cack handed playing. Normally, my built-in compressor is set just to trap the really big transients and to almost be invisible the rest of the time. However, we are adding a new track to the set that features a bass intro that is heavily compressed. I am therefore thinking of sticking a true-bypass compressor pedal inline before my amp but need one that can do that heavy squish and as its only for the one track I don't want to spend mega bucks. What would you chaps recommend?
Jellyfish
Got the MXR Bass Compressor myself. I use it for heavy distorted tones, and basically have it set to its highest ratio so it's limiting rather than compressing. It can do a bit, a lot, and everything in between and I was lucky in that it was one of the first ones I've tried and it worked amazingly well. Marcus Miller was the first guy I saw that used one, which should give you an idea of its compressing and limiting capabilities. Go for about £115 used. toneknob
I've got the Analogman BiComp that is two compressors in one box, and individually selectable so you can have neither/either/or/both, and they've both got their own sonic characteristics. I use one for general day to day compression, then add in the other if I need a boost, or switch to the other to use its particular sound. There's one going in the "Effects For Sale" forum. (not mine!)
