Cosmo Valdemar
Not me, mostly I use neck only and the rest of the time both pickups (for songs where I need less cut through). I find the vintage sound far too thin to use in a band setting.....also to my ears it sounds nothing like an early 70s 4001 anyway.
Another example of the variation in Ricks these days - mine nailed the 'classic' tone!
I'm working off a small sample group though CV. I occasionally use a 75 4001 at a local jam and the bridge tone is much deeper and richer than my 4003 with the VTC in circuit. YMMV. jonsmith
Is it possible someone's already bypassed the capacitor in your 75 4001? I've done it to all my old Ricks that had it fitted as standard (it's just that capacitor that's added back into the circuit when you engage the vintage tone switch). Graham
A mate of mine is moving back to Canada in a couple of weeks and his guitarist there has bought one of these, in this finish, for him to play - more than a wee bit jealous.
I had a good few, and the tones do vary in my experience. I suppose it all depends on what you hear as a 'classic' tone as well. I picked up a new 4003 last year, and tone-wise, it's probably that most 'classic' sounding one I've had - now. Fitting a Hipshot bridge really did help, both with a slightly different tone, and improved playing position. All the Rics I've owned I've always aspired to a Squire-esque growl, and I think after x amount of years, I've finally got it, or at least my own spin on it.
