I'm looking for low gain drive, something that sounds like a valve amp being pushed slightly, like a Trace Elliot V6 or an Ampeg for example. I'm looking at these two because they have the EQ shaping which I think I'm really missing from the Ultimate Drive. I've checked out the super JOYO thread on talkbass and there was quite a lot of mention about the American pedal but not the British one. Anyone got any experience with either of these or any advice as to which one to get? I will also be using it with my guitar, which I like the Marshall sound so that would be a point for the British pedal. Thanks! ahpook Posted March 21, 2014 Share Posted March 21, 2014 (edited) I've got one of the American sound pedals and I really like it for guitar but for bass I'be always found the bottom end to be a bit lacking, and the bass control centres on the frequencies round 'mush', so trying to get some of your low frequencies back isn't that easy. Apparently (again, on behalf of the band's guitarist) the Marshall pedal is a different one. He wasn't as impressed with it as the one linked above, but that's his opinion. I haven't heard that one myself yet. I'll be hearing the American one pretty soon, with thanks to Dannybuoy Edit; Aha ! just checked the link at the OP - I guess that's the Marshall jobbie ? oops, I did it again. dannybuoy Posted March 21, 2014 Share Posted March 21, 2014 Went in the post today for you - sod's law dictates the postie will try to deliver it while you are out picking up the other one! I think the American has decent low end retention, but as mentioned above, the low EQ is centred a bit higher than most bass specific pedals, so if you boost it you could end up with a bit too much 200Hz mush. Lozz196 Posted March 22, 2014 Share Posted March 22, 2014 I know the kind of sound you`re after Mark, and if your Ampeg is anything like my little BA108 it has a great tone but you can`t get that slightly driven breakup from it. The Dave Hall Amps (DHA) pedals nail this sound really nicely, as does the Tech21 VT Bass (it`s an emulation of the Ampeg SVT, check it out on Youtube). I sold a guitarist friend my DHA VT1-EQ pedal and he loves it, but it`s not a high gain pedal by any means. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

It was still a bit "more" gain than I would want but sounded nice. Annoying Twit Posted March 29, 2014 Share Posted March 29, 2014 As they're analogue pedals, wouldn't it be possible for someone to develop a mod to adjust the EQ frequencies to be more bass friendly? I"ve been comparing using a Marshall Guv'nor GV-2 pedal on bass, versus a Behringer BDI-21. The bass specific Behringer definitely has EQ more suited to bass, but a surprising (to me) lack of distortion. I've heard some online demos of the Joyo American sound, and am tempted to buy one just for occasional guitar. If it was useful for bass too, that would be interesting. Kozmyk Posted July 15, 2017 Share Posted July 15, 2017 Excuse me resurrecting this thread but I had to comment. Yesterday I was messing with a looper and wanted to lay down a bass part. Not wanting to fart around with rewiring for bass I just chucked some Precision on and used the Pink one (British TrueTone) to add some bass EQ. Wow! Nice crunchy semi-breakup pleccy rock bass tone. Sounds real and dynamic. Who knew? They certainly don't advertise it as such for bass...they should. I have the Orange one (American) as well, I'll have to try that on bass next .
