Mr Stinky
My guitarist buddy has just made me into a Tom Petty fan. OMG what have i missed all these years!! I've just learnt Running Down A Dream. Although its a easy piece, it's just a great little riff. A real feel-good sound. I'm interested in other pieces that do the same. It should ideally be some thing that lets you look around as well. Perhaps have a wander about, doing it just for the joy of playing live. flyfisher
We used to have Lover Of The Bayou by Mudcrutch in our set. It wasn't as good as Petty's version though . . . www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ln7F-a05aQI

skankdelvar
Passionately loved his work up to Long After Dark. Then he seemed to enter a prolonged wobbly patch - collaborations with Dave Stewart and Jeff Lynne, The Wilbury's, acting. And - tbh - Mojo was not quite the 'stunning return to form' some held it to be. Top TP tracks (maybe) not already mentioned: Strangered in the Night One Story Town Something Big Straight Into Darkness Even The Losers Rebels Edited March 24, 2014 by skankdelvar
KevB
To the OP, if you've not seen it check out the long TP documentary 'Runnin Down A Dream', gives a pretty full resume of the man's music career, especially with the Heartbreakers. I saw a decent tribute act a while back, not sure if they are still around or not; http://www.toopetty.co.uk/ As a couple of members are also in 'Fleetwood Bac' I think the TP tribute takes a back seat when the FM trib are busy touring. Typical of the musical economy of the band. Petty stuff is perfect for cover bands - it is generally easy to play but sounds great. Most people know a lot more Petty material than they think they do too! The Classic Albums episode on Damn the Torpedoes is a great watch too... Once you start getting into all the duets/collaborations, the guy is everywhere! I absolutely love this one with Stevie Nicks: http://youtu.be/6UD0c58nNCQ I thought the name 'Tin Potty and the Windbreakers' might work as a tribute act.... KevB
Always liked 'Into The Great Wide Open' from the later era too, good collaboration with Jeff Lynne at that time. Cat Burrito
I think Tom Petty has been much more hit than miss over a very long musical career. Didn't spot anyone mentioning The Traveling Wilburys either which I thought was OK at the time but rediscovering them about 15yrs back I realised I'd been a bit harsh first time around - brilliant stuff. Diablo
Speaking of the Wilburys, I'm just a bit too young to remember them much other than the episode of Dukes of Hazzard when Roy Orbison played the Boars Nest! But my parents went to see Roy Orbison play live. He was the only act on the bill. Walked onto stage, played solid for 3 1/2 hours, said thanks to the crowd and walked off again. A great voice and player though, he just didn't have that outgoing frontman personality, perhaps a good thing sometimes. Sometimes the music is the show, rather than supplementing the egos on stage. Mr Stinky
Found another one. In the same way that All Night Long is a far better song than Since You've Been Gone. (Take note radio DJ's) I much prefer Run To You over Summer Of 69, which has been over done to death.
